Phyllis A. Gates TROY – Phyllis A. Ryan Gates, 56, passed away on Sunday, March 23, 2014 in Community Hospice at Samaritan Hospital surrounded by her loving family. Born in Troy, she was the daughter of Natalie A. Salvaggio Ryan of Troy and the late Joseph J. Ryan, Sr. Raised and educated in Troy, she was a graduate of Catholic Central High School. Phyllis worked for Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for 30 years, she retired in October of 2013 as Assistant Director/Counseling in the Office of Undergraduate and Continuing Education. She was devoted to her career and was greatly admired and respected by the R.P.I. community. Phyllis will be remembered as a caring and giving person who treasured spending time with her children, family and friends. She influenced those whom she met with her understanding heart, her ready smile and genuine loving concern. She enjoyed skiing and reading. Survivors in addition to her mother Natalie, include her son Donald J. Gregware, Jr., her daughter Melissa L. Gregware , her beloved granddaughter Mia Grace Novak all of Troy, her brother Joseph J. Ryan, Jr. (Lynn) of Troy, her sister Carol A. Ryan of Latham and several nieces, nephews and cousins. The family wishes to thank Rensselaer County Hospice and Samaritan Hospital 6th Floor nursing staff for all their care and support. Funeral services will be 9:15 a.m. on Wednesday, March 26, 2014 from the McLoughlin & Mason Funeral Home, corner of 109th Street and Third Avenue, Lansingburgh and at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church , Pawling Avenue, Troy where the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Troy. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
