William C. Agan VALLEY FALLS - William C. “Bill” Agan, 89, a longtime resident of Valley Falls died suddenly, Friday, January 18, 2013, at Samaritan Hospital in Troy. Born in Tomhannock, January 25, 1923, Bill was the son of the late Chester and Flora (Finch) Agan and for over 62 years the loving husband of Lorraine G. (Briggs) Agan of Valley Falls, who survives. Bill and Lorraine were married on May 20, 1950. Mr. Agan was educated in the Tomhannonck District one room school and attended Hoosick Falls High School. In January 1943, he was inducted into the United States Army. After basic training he was stationed with the 235th Operating Engineers Combat Battalion in the effort to liberate Southern Europe and Italy. Mr. Agan was honorable discharged on December 29, 1945, with the rank of Sergeant. After returning home from the service, Bill worked with friends to operate a coal and gristmill company in Valley Falls. For many years he continued to partner with his friends in the ownership and day-to-day operations of transforming the business into what is today Wiley Brothers Inc. in Schaghticoke. After more than 60 years in business and many friendships made, he relinquished his partnership in 2011. Bill was a member of the Valley Falls United Methodist Church, a Lifetime Member of both the American Legion Post #731 in Schaghticoke and the Powamppakonk Fish and Game Club in Pittstown, and a member of the Otter Pond Rod and Gun Club of the Adirondacks. As a younger man, he enjoyed bowling and participated in several area leagues. More recently he has enjoyed the hobby of woodworking from his home shop. In addition to his wife, Lorraine, Bill is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Eduardo Anzola MD of Valley Falls and a son and daughter-in-law, William B. and Donna Agan of Schaghticoke and her son and grandson, Vincent and Devin Speenburgh. Also survived by many nieces and nephews and their respective families located across the country. In addition to his parents, a sister, the late Winifred Wolff, predeceased him. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2013, at the Valley Falls United Methodist Church, located at 16 State Street in Valley Falls, at 10:30 A.M. with Rev. G. Ewart Morris officiating. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the church on Friday, January 25, 2013, from 3:00 – 7:00 P.M. Inurnment, will be held later this spring with military honors at the Gerald B. H. Solomon National Veterans Cemetery in Schuylerville. At the request of the family, memorial contributions, if desired, may be made to either the Valley Falls United Methodist Church, PO Box 236, Valley Falls, NY 12185 or to the Hoosic Valley Rescue Squad, 1448 NY Route 40, Schaghticoke, NY 12154, in memory of William C. Agan.
