William H. Finn, beloved husband of Leona Sommo Finn, died on Thursday, May 8, 2014, at his home surrounded by his loving family. Born in Troy, he was the son of the late William and Marie Cleary Finn. He attended Troy schools, was a graduate of Troy High School and took classes at University of California, Berkley. Bill was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II. He served in the Pacific Theater and received as awards four Bronze Stars, the Good Conduct Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, the WWII Victory Medal, the Philippine Liberation Medal and the Naval Occupation of Japan Medal. Bill worked for 39 years at Allegany Ludlum Steel which became Al Tech Specialty Steel in Watervliet, retiring in 1990. He lived in North Greenbush since 1949, was a charter member of St. Jude the Apostle Church, Wynantskill, a member of the Wynantskill Fire Department, North Greenbush American Legion No. 1489, a member of the United Steel Workers and was an avid fisherman along with his son at Burden Lake. Bill was a very active volunteer and board member for the Rensselaer County ARC. The family would like to thank Community Hospice of Rensselaer County and especially their staff, Erin, Linda and Bree for the kind care they gave Bill. Survivors in addition to his wife include his son, Kevin Finn of Stephentown. He was predeceased by his cherished child, Colin, his sisters, Loretta Hess and Winifred Finn and his brother, Raymond Finn. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be from the Thomas S. Connolly Funeral Home, 294 Whiteview Road, Wynantskill on Monday at 8:45 a.m. and at 9:30 a.m. from St. Jude the Apostle Church, Wynantskill where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Anthony Ligato, pastor. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Troy. Calling hours will be at the funeral home today from 4 to 7 p.m. Contributions to St. Jude's Church Memorial Fund, 43 Brookside Ave., Wynantskill, NY 12198 and/or Community Hospice of Rensselaer County, 295 Valley View Blvd., Rensselaer, NY 12144 in memory of Bill would be appreciated.
