Helen M. Dowd Obituary
Helen M. Dowd LATHAM - Helen Daley Dowd, 87, died suddenly on Tuesday, March 26, 2013 at Lee Memorial Hospital in Ft. Myers, FL where she was enjoying respite from winter's cold with Chris and Sam. At the time of her death, Helen was surrounded by her loving children. Born in Troy on January 7, 1926, Helen was the devoted daughter of the late John and Charlotte (Taylor) Daley and the beloved wife of the late Joseph A. Dowd. A lifelong resident of Troy, Helen received her education in the Lansingburgh Schools, graduating in 1943. Though she would have loved to go to college, it wasn't in the cards for her. It was World War II and Helen took her first job at the Watervliet Arsenal. Three of her brothers were in service overseas and Helen felt that she, too was helping the war effort. At the conclusion of the war, Helen went to work for the Troy Department of Recreation, working under Ed Wachter (Uncle Sam and Basketball Hall of Famer), who became a dear friend. After some years devoted to raising her three children, Helen reentered the work world…one of the original working moms of the early sixties! She was a secretary/stenographer for several businesses, Murco Chemical, Troy Chamber of Commerce and eventually working in mortgage banking (Cohoes Savings Bank). But her favorite position was as a medical secretary in the X-Ray Department of the former Leonard Hospital in Lansingburgh. Helen was a member of the St. Augustine's Mothers Club and was a dedicated brownie leader of Troop 55. She loved being part of the Burgh Class of '43 reunion committee. She bowled weekly at Hilltop Bowl with “Burgh Alumni” for 25 years. In her younger days, Helen enjoyed swimming and taking long walks, exercise class and dancing. In more recent years, Helen became involved in the Troy Home Bureau and the local chapter of AARP. Helen was a voracious reader who loved vocabulary and working with words, from creative writing to word searches to trading barbs with friends and family. Helen was known for her quick wit. She also loved going out to dinner with family and friends. She loved her cat, “Merlin”. Helen is survived by her devoted children; Gerry Pawlusiak of Hooksett, NH, Christine Dowd (Sam DiSibio) of Latham and Joseph (Cindy) Dowd of Wynantskill; four treasured grandchildren, Jake (Caryl) Pawlusiak, Bennett (Katie) Pawlusiak, Kaitlin Dowd and Connor Dowd. Also survived by several nieces and nephews and her dearest friends, Christine Martone and Anne Manginelli. She will be missed by her honorary family, Samara, Dave, Mia, Adison, Noli and Lana Ceccucci. She was predeceased by brothers she admired, Bennett, John, George, Paul and Robert and a sister she adored, Charlotte. The family would like to thank the Cape Coral Fire Dept. for their quick response and the compassionate staff of the MICU at Lee Memorial Hospital in Ft. Myers, FL. Funeral will be held Wednesday at 8:45 a.m. from the John J. Sanvidge Funeral Home, Inc., 565 Fourth Avenue (at the Corner of 115th Street) in Lansingburgh, thence to St. Augustine's Church, Lansingburgh, where at 9:30 a.m. the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from to 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. Interment will be held in St. Mary's Cemetery, Troy. Those desiring, may make memorial contributions to Lustgarten Foundation, 1111 Stewart Avenue, Bethpage, NY 11714 , a foundation close to Helen's heart. The family asks that you please sign the online guest book below. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted by the family to the John J. Sanvidge Funeral Home, Inc., 565 Fourth Avenue, Troy, New York12182. (518) 235-0952.
