Bertha Flannery COHOES – Bertha Flannery, 95, died April 13, 2014. Bertha was born in Carbondale, PA the daughter of Samuel and Anna (Katz) Kurlansky. She married her childhood sweetheart, Martin ‘Mert’ Flannery, and moved with him to Cohoes in 1942 where they raised a family and enjoyed 49 years of marriage until his death in 1989. Bertha was a homemaker and later worked as a seamstress in several local shirt factories. She worked at the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles as a mail and supply clerk until her retirement in 1984. Bertha was very active in the community, an original member of the Cohoes Citizen’s Party, helping to reform city government during the 60’s and 70’s. She was an avid Yankee fan, loved to travel and was a long time member of the Cohoes Multi- Service Senior Center where she sang with the Silver Tops and, for many years, was the smiling face behind the jewelry counter Known for her cheery spirit and love of life, she was the family storyteller and journalist, relating memories and stories to family and friends. Her merry laugh will be missed by everyone. Bertha is survived by two sons, Robert L. Flannery (Harriet) of Clifton Park and Harold Martin Flannery (Patricia) of North Greenbush. She has two grandsons, Timothy (Jill) and Matthew (Sarah) and three beloved great grandsons, Andrew, Aidan and Macklin. She was predeceased by six siblings, Rebecca (Kahn), Simon, Leo, Maurice, Abraham and Arthur. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Monza Kurlansky and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins. The family would like to thank Sandy, Ashley and Carol and the staff of The Community Hospice, especially Raymond, Colleen, Caroline and Trish for their loving care. Arrangements are private at the request of the family with a celebration of Bertha’s life in the early summer.
