Ned Haggerty Obituary
William "Ned" Haggerty, Jr., 81, died peacefully on Saturday, June 28, 2014, with his daughter by his side, at the Eddy Village Green in Cohoes.
Born in Green Island, son of the late William and Kathleen Crummy Haggerty, he was raised in Green Island and resided in Lansingburgh most of his life and had been a resident of Clifton Park for the last 20 years. Ned was a graduate of Heatly High School in Green Island and served his country proudly in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, where he was seriously wounded on July 4, 1953 on Pork Chop Hill, earning his second Purple Heart and spending many months recovering in Japan. Upon his return from the war, he had been a special agent with Continental Insurance Co. for many years and then was employed as a clerk at the Troy Post Office, retiring in the late 70s.
Ned summered at his camp at Brant Lake for decades and was a frequent visitor of the Lansingburgh Fire House with his friend, the late Capt. Harry Dahl and was a fixture at the former Henry's Restaurant in Lansingburgh. He was named "2004 Man of the Year" at the Friends of 112th Street and had been a lifelong communicant of the former St. Joseph's Church in Green Island until its closing. Ned will always be remembered for his generosity, his sense of humor, his smile and his ability to make people laugh. Ned's grandson, Brendan, had a very special bond with his "Papa Ned" and they spent countless nights watching the Yankees, eating pizza and sharing Ned's love of sports trivia. Ned's loss is immeasurable.
He is survived by his beloved son, William Haggerty, III, and his wife Karen of Unionville, Ct., and their children, Sean and Heather Haggerty; his loving and devoted daughter, Erin Haggerty Duffy and her husband, Vincent of Waterford and their children, Bridgette and Brendan Duffy; his special niece, Patsy Lamb Isgro and her husband, Jack of Greenwich and their daughters, Kathleen Isgro and Mary Isgro McDonald. Ned was predeceased by his beloved sister, M. Patricia Lamb and her husband, Jack. The family would like to thank Ned's longtime friends, Paul Burke, Danny Cole, John "Red" Flynn and Mike McNulty, who supported him to the very end. Ned also leaves behind a large number of dear and spiritual friends who were like a second family to him.
Funeral from the McNulty Funeral Home, 147 Hudson Ave., Green Island, on Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. and at St. Augustine's Church in Troy at 9:30 a.m. Interment with full military honors will follow at Gerald B.H. Solomon-Saratoga National Cemetery. Calling hours will be on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made in Ned's memory to the Wounded Warrior Project, 370 Seventh Ave., Suite 1802, New York, NY 10001 or The Military Order of the Purple Heart, 5413 Backlick Road, Springfield, VA 22151.
