Edward J. Zavis COHOES – Edward J. (Zawistowski) Zavis, 89, died peacefully Saturday, June 28, 2014 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Troy. Born in Watervliet on June 17, 1925, he was the son of the late Frank and Antoinette Starzec Zawistowski. Ed attended Immaculate Conception School and Watervliet High School. He was a US Air Force veteran of World War II. He was employed by the Mohawk Paper Mill and later by Ward Foods (Tip Top Bread) based in Syracuse as a route salesman for bread and bakery products for 25 years before retiring. He was a member of the Watervliet K of C where he worked bingo, the Watervliet Lodge of Elks #1500 and was a communicant of the former Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Watervliet where he served as an usher and a member of the Holy Name Society. He currently was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Shrine Church in Troy. He was an avid bowler, loved working around his home, enjoyed traveling and was a great fan along with his wife Mary of Watervliet High Cannoneer sports. He also was a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates. He was the beloved husband of 63 ½ years of his devoted wife Mary C. Battisti Zavis, dear brother of Joseph (late Sandy) Zawistowski of Watervliet, Raymond (Lorraine) Zawistowski of Halfmoon, Mary (Edward) Celardo of Scotch Plains, NJ and the late Frank and John Zawistowski, Stephen Zavis and Viola Anderson. He is also survived by several cherished nieces and nephews. The funeral will be Wednesday at 9:45 am from the Parker Bros. Memorial, 2013 Broadway, Watervliet and at 10:30 am at St. Anthony of Padua Shrine Church, Troy where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Watervliet. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 4-8 pm.
