EATON, EUGENE "GENE" TROY - Eugene "Gene" Eaton, 73, former Rensselaer County Sheriff and Mayor of the City of Troy entered into eternal life at his home in the loving comfort of his family on Friday, March 11, 2011. Gene married Kathleen E. Hammond Eaton on November 17, 1962 and were proud to be blessed with six children; Michael (Mary) Eaton of Brunswick, Karen (Sean) Kilbride of Gansevoort, Sheila (Michael) Barna of Wynantskill, Christine (Philip) Buckley of Edgewater, MD, Kathleen (Jon) Merrill of Greenwich and Matthew (Kendra) Eaton of Baltimore, MD, cherished "Poppy" to Nolan, Aidan and Riagan McMahon, Andrew and Adam Barna, Rachael, Anthony and Thomas Eaton, Celia, Ian, Tess and Evan Merrill, Grace and Isabel Buckley and Ryan and Bradyn Eaton, brother of Martha (late Joseph) Bain of Latham, Marion (George) Farley of Albany and the late William (Mary Jane of Lansingburgh) Eaton, the late Stewart (Helen of Troy) Eaton, the late Christine (Peter of Rye, NY) Molinari, the late Marilyn (James of Tucker, GA) McGlynn, the late John Eaton, the late Gail (late Paul) Teta, the late Joyce Eaton, Diane Trembly and Donald Eaton, brother-in-law to Carole and Tom Coyne and to Jim (late Anne) Grady all of Colonie, father-in-law of the late Jay McMahon, also survived by his loving nieces and nephews and many friends who are too numerous to name. A native of Troy, Gene was the son of the late Enoch F. and Mary Gillick Eaton and was a graduate of Troy PS #12, Class of 1951 and Troy High School, Class of 1955 where he excelled in Baseball and Basketball. He honorably served his country while in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1964, serving overseas. Gene began his career at Behr-Manning in Watervliet, then went on to The Troy News Co. He was a Trooper with the New York State Police, an Investigator with the New York State Attorney General's Office, was elected and served as Rensselaer County Sheriff from 1976-1984, was Director of Security, retiring as Director of Operations from Capital Off Track Betting Corporation. In 1993, Gene was elected as a Councilman and served as Mayor of the City of Troy from 1995 to 1996. He was also a Sergeant-At-Arms of the New York State Senate. In retirement, he enjoyed being a Funeral Director's assistant, serving families in their time of need at the Sanvidge Funeral Homes, and was a driver employed by Enterprise Rent-A-Car. He is a communicant of Sacred Heart Church and previously of St. William's Church where he served as a Lector and Usher. He was a member, committeeman, ward leader and past Chairman of the Troy City Republican Committee, a member of the Rensselaer County Republican Committee, the New York State Fraternal Association of Retired Troopers, the New York State Sheriff's Association, was a founder and charter member of the Carroll Hill Homeowner's Association, the Frear Park Old Timer's Golf League, Troy Lodge of Elks #141, Troy Ancient Order of Hibernians (A.O.H.), Troy Knights of Columbus and was a youth baseball manager and coach of his sons at both South Troy and Spring Little Leagues. He was a life-long fan of the New York Yankees and enjoyed his annual family trip to Yankee Stadium, as well as attending games with family at Camden Yards in Baltimore. He also loved playing basketball, golfing, swimming and being a Lifeguard. His greatest joys were spending time with all of his family at his pool and home, attending all of his children and grandchildren's sporting and academic related functions, the Casino and wintering at his home in Zephyrhills, FL with Kathy and their friends. Funeral with New York State Police, Rensselaer County Sheriff's and Troy Police Honors will be held on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. from the John J. Sanvidge Funeral Home, Inc., 565 Fourth Avenue (Corner of 115th Street and Fourth Ave) Lansingburgh, thence to Sacred Heart Church, 310 Spring Avenue, Troy, where at 10:30 a.m. the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home on Monday from 3 to 8 p.m. Full military honors will be rendered at the interment in the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville following the Mass. Gene's family wishes to extend their sincere expression of appreciation to the staff of Hortense & Louis Rubin Dialysis Center in Troy for the wonderful loving comfort and care that was offered to him and his family.
