Obituary Condolences

William C. “Sam” Hoag PITTSTOWN - Longtime Pittstown resident, William C. “Sam” Hoag, 85, passed away peacefully at his residence, Tuesday, February, 5, 2013, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Boyntonville, February 16, 1927, he was the son of the late William L. and Etta (Eldrige) Hoag and the husband of Rose Janet (Lockrow) Hoag who survives. “Sam” was educated in the Boyntonville District School and as a young man worked as a farm hand. At the age of 16 years old he joined the United States Navy and served in World War II from November 1943 through April 1946. At the time of his honorable discharge he had earned the rank of Seaman 1st Class. Throughout his life he held many jobs including; hauling bulk milk in a tank truck, driving a school bus, operating heavy equipment, working as a mechanic and most may remember him as the foreman, “Mower Sam” while working for the Rensselaer County Highway Department. Over the years he enjoyed fishing, hunting and was quite the storyteller. His friends and family will sorely miss him and his stories. In addition to his wife, he is survived by their children; Beverly (Blaine) Freemantle of Pittstown, Lenita Thompson of Troy, his siblings, Aaron Hoag of Grafton, George Hoag of Hoosick Falls, Harriet DeFilippis of Poestenkill, Nancy Barnes of Round Lake, granddaughters; Diana Freemantle and husband Dan McIntyre of Poestenkill, Annette Thompson and Scott Pelletier of Petersburg, Jolene Thompson and Ed VanVranken of Pittstown and Meredith Thompson of Troy, great-grandchildren, Danny McIntyre, Katie McIntyre, Scott Peletier Jr., Ryan Peletier, and Emilee and Tyler VanVranken. In addition to his parents, Sam was predeceased by two sons, the William L. Hoag and Martin W. Hoag and his siblings, Willard, Guy, Albert, Thelma, Ruth, Flora (“Woodie”) and Myrtie (“Skeet”). Memorials contributions if desired may be made to either the Volunteer Services c/o VA Hospital, 113 Holland Avenue, Albany, NY 12206 or the Pittstown United Methodist Church, 57 Old State Route 7, Valley Falls, NY 12094. A funeral service will be held on Friday, February 8, 2013 at 10:00 A.M. at the Howard B. Tate & Son Funeral Home Inc., 2237 NY-7, located in Raymertown. Burial will follow in Norton Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday, February 7th, from 5:00-8:00 P.M. The Hoag family wished to extend a special thank you to the Bennington VA Clinic Home Based Primary Care Team for their amazing support and to Community Hospice of Rensselaer County for help in honoring Sam's last request.
