Ralph Nusca Obituary
Ralph Nusca, Sr. TROY – Ralph Nusca, Sr., 83, retired firefighter for the City of Troy, died Monday, February 11, 2013 at St. Mary's Hospital in Troy. Born in Troy on December 16, 1929, he was the son of the late John and Mary Esposito Nusca. Mr. Nusca was raised and educated in South Troy. He was a US veteran from 1947-48. Upon returning home, Ralph was a steel worker for Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corp in Watervliet for a brief period. On August 20, 1958, Ralph was appointed to the Troy Fire Department and served the City of Troy for over 29 years working out of Central Station until his retirement on January 21, 1987. Ralph received the Charles E. McCarthy award along with three other firefighters for the brave rescue of trapped elderly tenants made during the Fifth Avenue Hotel fire on February 11, 1972 at the corner of Fulton and 5th Avenue. In 1977, he organized a program called “Metals for Charity”, where he collected various scrap metals and donated the money to various charities. Ralph was a past president of the Troy Uniformed Firefighters Association and received the Past Presidents Award in 1966. Ralph also operated the Albia Delivery Company and enjoyed family vacations to Wildwood and Atlantic City, NJ. He was the husband of the late Dorothy K. Ford Nusca, devoted father of John P. (Joyce) Nusca of Mechanicville, Richard (Nancy) Nusca of Troy, Ralph (Carol) Nusca, Jr. of Largo, FL, William (Kathy) Nusca of Troy and Joseph E. (Cathy) Nusca of Valatie, proud grandfather of Julie (Darren) Bourke, Elizabeth Nusca, Erik (Catherine) Nusca, Jennifer (Joe) McCormick, Ken, Laurie, Heather, Tracie, Billy, Joe and Alexis Nusca, great grandfather of Mya, Richard, Jameson and Oliver, brother of Rose Finan of Castleton, Antoinette (Luke) Tripp of Melbourne, FL and the late Michael (wife Margaret survives) Nusca of St. Petersburg, FL, dear friend of the late Philomena Ostwald. Also survived by several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be Thursday at 8:30 am from the Parker Bros. Memorial, 2013 Broadway, Watervliet and at 9:15 am at Our Lady of Victory Church, Troy. Interment Saratoga National Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 4-7 pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Red Cross, 33 Everett Road, Albany, NY 12205
