Katherine Combs WATERFORD - Katherine Elsie Sophronia Combs left this world to join her mother and father in the arms of the Lord on Thursday, February 13, 2014. Katherine was born in Whitehall, New York on April 4,1936 to Frederick E. Combs Sr. and Corennie (Fountaine) Combs. Moving to Waterford at a very young age, she attended Waterford public schools. Katherine was a member of the national honor society and competed in the national spelling bee in Washington D.C. After graduating as salutatorian of the class of 1954, She continued her education as one of the first women to attend college at RPI in Troy. Katherine was employed as a chemist for KAPL and returned to Russell Sage night school where she earned her masters degree. Kath loved to travel including two trips to Western Europe to visit her brother stationed in the Air Force as well as trips around North America. Katherine was a member and past Matron of the former Ionic Chapter, Order of The Eastern Star. After her retirement she stayed home and attended to her ailing mother who passed in 2005. Katherine is survived by her brother, Frederick E. Combs Jr., a nephew, Daniel J. Combs both of Waterford and two nieces Elizabeth A Charbonneau of Cohoes and Melissa M. (David) Bagley of Colonie. She is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at 10:00 A.M. at the Philip J. Brendese Funeral Home, 133 Broad St. (Rte. 32), Waterford with Rev. Cheri Peaslee officiating. Internment will be in the Waterford Rural Cemetery. Relatives and friends may visit at the funeral home Monday, February 17, 2014 from 2:00 to 4:00 P.M. and 7:00 to 9:00 P.M.
