Dorothy (Aspland) VigeantWHYNANTSKILL - Dorothy (Aspland) Vigeant, of Wynantskill, died peacefully, December 3, 2017, at The Eddy Memorial Geriatric Center in Troy, at the age of 90, surrounded by those she loved and who loved her. Dorothy was born in Troy, the only child of Charles J. Aspland and Edna Mae Spencer, on June 8, 1927. She was also the step-daughter of F.Warren Rourke. Dorothy attended Troy schools and was a graduate of Troy High School, Class of 1945, and Albany Business College. She married J. Edward "Big Ed" Vigeant, II, on November 27, 1949, at St. Patrick's Church in Troy, and together they owned and operated Troy Neon Sign Co., along with their sons and daughter-in law Patricia, for over 40 years. Upon their retirement, they built a home in Bradenton, Florida where they spent their winters. Ed and Dorothy enjoyed spending time with friends, family gatherings at their home in Wynantskill, and their many trips to Clifden, in County Galway, Ireland to visit those who cared for Ed when he and other survivors washed ashore, having survived several days adrift in a life raft after their B24 Navy patrol bomber force landed in the North Atlantic during WWII. They made enduring friendships on these journeys and in 1996, after Big Ed had passed away, Dorothy proudly participated along with the pilot of the aircraft, her children, several grandchildren and other family members in the unveiling of a monument memorializing the entire crew, including those who perished in the crash, in Clifden near the location where the survivors came ashore. After Big Ed's passing in 1992, Dorothy met Raymond Engwer and they shared 22 happy years together doing many things that they loved including traveling, golfing and enjoying time with their families and many friends in both New York and Florida. Dorothy was a member of the First Reformed Church in Wynantskill for over 50 years and also the Kirkwood Church in Bradenton, FL. She was a former volunteer with Tidewell Hospice in Bradenton, and a former member of LaSalle Women's Auxillary, Troy High School Class of 1945 Reunion Committee, Peridia Golf Club, the Tri-City Banjo Band, Troy AOH, and the American Ex-Prisoner's of War. Dorothy was preceded in death by her father, her beloved mother who died 21 years ago to the day, on December 3, 1996, her step-father, her husband Ed, longtime companion Raymond Engwer, and her daughter-in-law, Patricia (Miorin) Vigeant. She is survived by her children, Babette (James) Corona, J. Edward Vigeant, III, Judith (Richard) Van Auken and William S. Vigeant. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Jennifer (Patrick Sweet) Corona, Allison (Jason Lamothe) Corona, J. Edward (Becca) Vigeant, IV, William Vigeant, Amy (Steven) Hankle, Dana Vigeant, Catherine Van Auken, Hailey (Josh) Shoemaker and Lauren Van Auken, as well as great-grandchildren, Meara and Avery Sweet, Mikayla and Mason Biance, Jace Shoemaker and Easton Hankle. She is also survived by the Engwer family. "Dot" was well loved by all who knew her. She was kind, funny and easy going, always with a smile, especially when she was with her family who she treasured so much, and she made friends wherever she went. She will be sincerely missed, much loved and remembered always. The family would like to thank the staff at The Eddy Courtyard for the love and compassionate care given to Dorothy while she resided there. Their genuine love and concern for her, and for her family during her final days, was truly appreciated and will always be remembered. Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Dorothy's family on Thursday, December 7, 2017, from 4 to 7 p.m., at First Reformed Church, 413 Main Ave., Wynantskill. Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 8, 2017, at 10 a.m., also at First Reformed Church. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Troy.
