Allen Lee (Abraham Podolny) Baron

Allen Lee Baron (Abraham Podolny) Died of cancer on December 14, 2012, in Tucson, Arizona, at age 79. Born Abraham Podolny in the Bronx, New York in 1933 to Benjamin and Lillian Podolny, he attended DeWitt Clinton High School. He left New York and finished high school in Los Angeles while staying with his sister, Eleanor Kibbee. He enrolled at UCLA in 1952 joining the Pi Lambda Phi fraternity, but his studies were interrupted by Army service during the Korean War. He was stationed in a small village outside La Rochelle, France, where he nurtured his love of fine wines. He returned to UCLA in 1955, and by alphabetical destiny was seated next to a coed named Martha Patterson in one of his classes. He changed his name to Allen Baron, taking the last name of his best friend, Ronnie Baron. He graduated from UCLA in 1958, married Martha in 1960, and they moved to San Francisco for two years before returning to Los Angeles where he had a long career as a toy and hobby sales representative and later in the Halloween costume industry. Allen spent many happy hours at the Mulholland Tennis Club, where he had served as Board Member and President. Retirement and the lure of grandchildren led Allen and Martha to relocate to Tucson, Arizona in 2004, where they re-established their busy social calendar full of golf, tennis, bridge, and volunteer work. Allen was active in Skyline Country Club, Congregation Or Chadash, and various bridge clubs. He and Martha volunteered with CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) for foster children. They both traveled extensively visiting friends and family around the world. He is survived by Martha, his loving wife of 52 years; daughters, Suzanne (Bruce Helming) and Alexandra (Douglas Frampton); grandsons, Ben and Leo Helming and friends and extended family who will all miss Allen's humor, warmth, and advice for every occasion. Memorial Services will be held in Tucson and Los Angeles in January. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the University of Arizona Medical Center North Campus Cancer Center.
