James J. Corrigan

James J. Corrigan, JR, M.D. Passed away at age 77 on December 19, 2012, after a 14-month battle with Pancreatic cancer. Jim was born in Pittsburgh, PA, son of Rita Mary, and James Corrigan, DDS. Jim and Carolyn, his wife and soul mate, had a blind date in 1954 and married in 1960. Their two children, Jeff (Michele) and Nancy (Kim) have five grandchildren: Ashlee (Chris), Kaila, Phoebe, Jaxon, and Colten, and one great-grandchild, Skyler. Jim is survived by sisters: Patricia Boudreau of CA; Mary Jane (Ron) Amodeo of FL; Michelle (Bill) Hittie of IN; sister-in-law Patricia Long of NH; and 18 nieces and nephews. Jim graduated from Juniata College in 1957; Univ. of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 1961. He was Medical Intern and a Pediatric Resident at Univ. of Colorado Medical Center, Denver. A Fellowship followed in Hematology/Oncology at Univ. of Illinois R&E Hospital in Chicago. He accepted a position at Emory Univ. School of Medicine, in Atlanta, GA. from 1966-1971. In January 1971 Jim became one of the original faculty members in the Pediatrics Dept. at the U. of A. Health Sciences Center. He was Chief of Pediatric Hem/Onc and Director of the Mountain States Regional Hemophilia Center. In 1987 he became Chief of Pediatric Rheumatology, and Professor of Internal Medicine. In 1990, he accepted the position of Vice Dean for Academic Affairs at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, LA; Interim Dean of Tulane Medical School in 1993; Dean of Tulane Medical School 1994-2000; V.P. of Tulane Health Sciences Center 2000-2002. Dr. Corrigan received a number of awards and honors: Alpha Omega Alpha Honorary Medical Society; Ross Award in Pediatric Research; Philip S. Hench Distinguished Alumnus Awards from the Univ. of Pittsburg; and Juniata College. Dr. Corrigan was a member of the Irish-American Pediatric Society; Tucson Sunrise Rotary Club; Foothills Forum; Pima county Medical Society; the American Medical Association. He received teaching awards from U of A and Tulane. After the return to Tucson in 2003, Dr. Corrigan began his teaching rounds in 2004 with Residents at UMC and TMC. The family would like to thank the medical staff at U of A Cancer Center and TMC Hospice for their caring and concern. Memorial Service will be held on January 19, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 5150 N. Valley View Drive, Tucson 85718, with a reception to follow.
