RUTH B. ALLMENDINGER 98, of Tucson, died June 3, 2008. Born September 2, 1909 in Hammond, OK, to Bert and Ella Porterfield. Following high school graduation at the age of 17, Ruth taught elementary grades in country schools in Oklahoma and Texas, as no advanced degree was required at that time. She later earned college hours during the summer months while teaching, after her marriage to Rupert, in Colorado. She earned her Bachelor's degree at Colorado State College, Greeley, in 1953. She also earned 30 hours toward a Master's Degree in Education and was later certified to teach by the state of California. She was a volunteer at Armory Park Senior Center for many years, earning many awards and certificates for her efforts in the Health Fair, Governing Board and various activities as well as being vice-president for several terms. Ruth served on numerous boards and volunteered for many organizations including, R.S.V.P, Pima Council of Aging, P.C.O.A., Senior Summit, CloseUp Program and was voted Woman of the Year in 1986 at the Sun Fair of Armory Park Senior Center and received numerous CIVICS awards from the City of Tucson. Recently, she was given a plaque and certificate from officials of Tucson and the State of Arizona for reaching the age of 99 (even though she would not have been 99 until September). She and her late husband, Rupert, were long time members of St. James Methodist Church where they also served on the Administrative Council. She is preceded in death by her husband, son, two brothers and two sisters. Survived by daughter, Carole (Robert) Burke of Tucson; five grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren. Service will be on Wednesday, June 11, 2008, at 9:30 a.m., EVERGREEN MORTUARY. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, N. Oracle Rd. & W. Miracle Mile. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m., prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the House of Prayer, 919 W. 30th Street, Tucson, AZ, 85713 in memory of Ruth B. Allmendinger.
