Whalley WILLIAMS Obituary

WILLIAMS, Whalley Herbert, 88, of Green Valley, Ariz., died on Thursday, April 11, 2013 at La Posada in Green Valley following complications from a stroke. Whalley was born on August 6, 1924, in Detroit, Mich., the son of Floyd and Lillian (Mihlader) Williams. He moved with his parents and brother, Floyd Jr., to Ferndale, Mich. in 1927, where his brother, John and sister, Joyce, were born. On April 1, 1949, he married Anne Mary Schubert of Detroit. He graduated from Lincoln High School in Ferndale before joining the Army and serving overseas during World War II as a member of the 78th Infantry Division ("Lightning"). He was awarded the Purple Heart and other medals during his service. Upon returning home, he attended Lawrence Institute of Technology, where he earned a degree in mechanical engineering. He worked for General Motors for 37 years as a die designer in the Detroit area until his retirement in 1987. He and his wife then moved to Green Valley, where he continued to stay active as a volunteer for over 24 years at the White Elephant in Green Valley and at the Casa Maria Soup Kitchen in Tucson. He loved to travel and to be in nature shared with his family. He and his wife continued to travel throughout the world during their retirement. He also enjoyed studying the Civil War, genealogy, watching baseball and basketball and playing golf. Mr. Williams is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Anne; four children, Kathrine (Philip) Steel of Rochester, Mich.; Michael of Tucson; Margaret Williams of Mt. Pleasant, Mich. and Theodore (Karen) of Bellingham, Wash.; his brother, John (June) and sister, Joyce; five grandchildren, Michael, Tracey, Alan, David and Aria and two great-grandchildren, Matthew and Sarah. He was predeceased by his parents and brother, Floyd Jr. A Memorial Service is planned for Saturday, June 1, 2013 at La Posada in Green Valley, AZ (El Dorado room) in the La Perla building at 2:00 p.m.
