Clifton Wilson Obituary

Clifton E. Wilson Clif Wilson died peacefully on March 12, 2011 having suffered a massive stroke. He was 91 years old. Clif cultivated a robust physical and mental life which stay with him throughout his productive years. He visited frequently with old friends and treasured his newest friendship with Judy Bowen of Green Valley. His travels continued to delight him as did visits to and from friends here and abroad. Clif enjoyed several career patterns. He spent a number of years working as a reporter in the northwest, but found his true love to be teaching. Clif received his Ph.D. from Minnesota in 1958 and finally found a home in the Department of Political Science teaching International Law. Look out Hugo Grotius. Clif was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Edith Wilson. He has many nieces and nephews who he joined every summer at family reunions. Dee Phillips has assumed a particular importance in his life. In 1947, Clif married Geneal Cowan, both Clif and Gene were endowed with a humanistic perspective on life and dedicated themselves to the efforts of the United Nations. Gene, who preceded Clif in death was the founder of the Tucson UNICEF store while Clif organized the Model UN Program at the UofA. Clif we are beholden to you for so much. There will be no public services. Arrangements by EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY.

When I was a UA political science student in the 70s Clif instilled in me a love of interntional law that has only grown over the years. I also took his UN class and served as Secretary General of Model UN under his leadership. Although I never had an opportunity to further study international law or work in the field, I did become a lawyer and now, semi-retired, I am enjoying myself immensely as "coach" of the UA law shool's Jessup International Law Moot Court team. The day he died I wastravelling with the team in Washington, D.C., where we had for the first time advanced to the international "world" rounds of the Jessup competition to argue issues of international law ranging from drones to burcas. Clif was in my heart and thoughts all week, and I was determined to return to Tucson and look him up to tell him what a deep impact he had made on my life, and how I am hoping to instill in my students the same appreciation of internantional law that he inspired in me. I am so sorry that I am too late, but will hold in my heart a picture of him looking over the shoulders of our students as they argued the principles he taught for so many years.

I moved in to my new home on Lind Rd almost five years ago and immediately met Clif who was my neighbor on Olson. His house and open fence opened to my property and i think he was a bit put off about losing his view to the West but through that open fense we became neighbors. I always admired this older man who wore a pony tail and a head ban. He seemed so deep in spirt and intellect. He and my dog Bear had a mutual admiration for each other but at a distance. Bear would bark and Clif would try to win his affection which i know he had.

About a year after Bear died i got my dog Michaela and while the fence had now been replaced by a wall Michaela and Clif became immediate friends.

I wish i had gotten to now Clif better. I saw him often at the Racquet Club and out and about around town but i think i missed out not getting to know him better.

Best wishes to his family and friends.
