Marlene Bence GREEN

GREEN, Marlene Bence passed away on August 20, 2017 at a private care facility in Tucson. She was born June 28, 1941 in Flint, Michigan. Preceded in death by her parents, Cecil Bence (1987) and Josephine Roe (2015). She is survived by her husband of 34 years, Michael D. Green and by a brother, Robert Roe (Lori) and sister, Diane Roe, both of Flint, Michigan. Additionally, she is survived by many cousins in the Michigan area. Marlene had many educational and professional accomplishments in her life. She attended Flint Technical High School and graduated from Grand Blanc High School near Flint in 1958 at age 16. She received an Associate Degree in Arts from Flint Junior College in 1960. She was awarded a Bachelors of Arts Degree from the University of Michigan (Flint) in 1962. She taught English at Kearsley High School in Flint from 1962 to 1968. At the same time further pursuing her graduate studies, she was awarded a Masters of Arts Degree from the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) in 1968. She was then employed as a University of Michigan Research Lecturer and Editor from 1969 to 1972 when she was accepted as a PhD candidate in the College of Education in 1972. She concurrently worked as an administrator for the Michigan State Dept. of Education from 1972 to 1974. During her academic years at University of Michigan, College of Education, she received the award for outstanding scholar for two consecutive years. She was awarded her PhD in Education (major in rehab psychology) in 1973 from the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor). In addition, an awards dinner was given in her honor for the outstanding PhD dissertation of 1973 for the University of Michigan, College of Education. Following her graduation, she was employed as an Associate Professor at Michigan State University (Lansing) from 1974 to 1979. After relocating to Arizona, she held the position of Associate Professor of Rehab Psychology at the University of Arizona from 1979 to 1984. In between, she held her own private practice until becoming Director of Psychology at Cottonwood de Tucson Rehab Center from 1986 to 1991. She then worked as a consultant until her husband urged her to retire early in 1994 at the ripe old age of 53. She never regretted her decision. She was a longtime certified member of the American Psychological Society and the Southern Arizona Psychological Association. Marlene had many passionate interests in her life, which she pursued with her husband. She was a voracious reader, averaging a book every three days. Additionally, they pursued camping, hiking, birdwatching, whitewater rafting, house boating, tall ship sailing, snorkeling, swimming, RVing (15 years), and dancing (she had the moves). She will always be remembered for her beauty, intelligence, and sense of humor. A life well lived. Her burial will be private. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
