Alexis DOSTER Obituary

DOSTER, Alexis "Dusty", III a longtime resident of Annapolis, MD, who returned to Tucson recently, died on June 25, 2017 at age 74. Born in Waterbury, CT, Dusty attended Green Fields School and graduated from Amphitheater High School and the UA. In a career that spanned 35 years at the Smithsonian Institution in Wash., D.C., Dusty was a curator at the Air and Space Museum, a senior editor at Smithsonian Books, and history editor at Smithsonian magazine. The breadth and depth of his knowledge and interests was legendary, his reading habits voracious, his memory remarkable, and his love of the desert and his family passionate. He had a black belt in talking. Dusty is survived by his wife of 52 years, Cynthia (Bell) Doster; daughters, Tracy Welch (Tim Savage) and Stephanie (John) Capuano, all of Tucson; brother, Robert W. Campbell, of Tumacácori, AZ; sister, Sara Campbell Wohl of Croton-on-Hudson, NY, and five grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 30, 2017, at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, 602 N. Wilmot Rd., Tucson, 85711. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dusty's memory to Green Fields School, 6000 N. Camino de la Tierra, Tucson, AZ 85741 or to Casa de la Luz Foundation, 7740 N. Oracle Rd., Tucson, AZ 85704. Arrangements by ABBEY FUNERAL CHAPEL, 520-888-1111.

I went to Amphi with him. We were good friends. He was a special young man. We talked a lot together. I lost track of him after graduating. When he and his family came back to Tucson, he called me and we went out to lunch. His wife was busy so we did not meet at that time. We told each other about our lives and he told me what he had done after graduation. I was in awe. Then he said he had cancer and did not know how long he had. . He passed away not too long after our meeting. He said he would call me when his wife was able to join and I could meet her. He was very proud of his family. He gave me his address and I went to their home to chec

I had the very great good fortune to work with Dusty, whose contributions to the creation of the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum were both numerous and significant. Dusty had an extraordinary depth of knowledge on a wide range of topics that went far beyond his museum specialty, which was rocketry and spaceflight, and he was truly a polymath. But beyond this, he was, quite simply, a really great man. Dusty was funny, helpful, calm amidst occasional chaos, and never less than a gentleman in every circumstance. He made equally great and significant contributions in his work at the Smithsonian Institution Press and at Smithsonian Exposition books. Those of us who knew him were truly fortunate, and those who didn't, but who visit the Smithsonian, continue to this day to benefit from his dedication and his work. God bless, Dusty!

Dusty was a hero of mine first, and then later a life-long friend. He was a great model for Booter's oals: manly, smart, and kind. Not to mention patient with a lot of stinky kids, myself among them. And he was a guide. I listened eagerly to his stories -- so many! so various! -- and I read Hemingway because he told me I had to.

Rebecca and I regret that his memorial service occurred while we were out of town. Our thoughts and love go out to his family. He leaves a great hole behind.

Please know we'll never forget Dost. I can see him now in his little TR2 roadster, buzzing up to Green Fields to pick up Boo. Handsome as a lord, young and brave. When I think of Dost, he's always brave.

Dearest Tracy and family,

It is with great sadness that we read of the passing of Dusty. When we lose a dad or grandfather it is a hole in our world that we do not get to fill. But, we do find a lasting way to honor our loved one through moving forward with resilience and love. We send you prayers to move forward a day at a time.

A mighty candle was extinguished with Dusty's death. Rarely have I known a man of such surpassing intelligence, breadth of knowledge, wit and graciousness. There will never be another quite like him. We send our condolences and affection to his beloved wife Cyn.

Dusty was a friend to me at Amphi. Over the last few years, we reconnected even before they move back to Tucson. We had lunch one day and talked about so much. I am sad that he has passed, but know he is now healthy and safe with God. I never met his wife, but he told me so much about his family. I know their hearts are hurting and he will be missed.
