Catharine MCVEIGH Obituary

MCVEIGH, Catharine long-time Tucson resident, passed away at the TLC at San Lucas assisted living home March 10, 2017 at the age of 90. She was preceded in death by her eldest son, Kerry. She is survived by her loving children, Sheila Gill and Rory McVeigh (Mariam), and her brother, Frank Cuddy (Claudette). She is also survived by four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Catharine lived an extraordinarily rich life. Born and raised in Auburn, NY, she moved to Tucson in 1961. In addition to raising three children, she helped run the McVeigh Reading Center for many years. She also worked at the University of Arizona Medical Center. Later, she took on a variety of new challenges, including opening her own clothing resale shops. Her children remember her as not only a loving mother, but also an avid reader. As Rory put it, "she must have read 10,000 books in her lifetime (almost all nonfiction), and she always loved engaging in a good political debate". Catharine had a love of nature and of God. Sheila recalls, "My mother encouraged me in my faith and taught me to pray at an early age." A small memorial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to the Lupus Foundation of America ([email protected]). Arrangements by ABBEY FUNERAL CHAPEL.

Catharine had a lilting laugh and a beautiful smile. We are so glad we got to spend time with her over this past year. Jim has fond memories of her from when he and Kerry played together as children and listened to music as teenagers. She was a special person and will be missed.

I remember fondly the summer Aunt Catharine stayed with us in Gloversville. Every day she and I would walk to Sacred Heart Church with my dog, Peeky, and she would give me a coin to put in the box to light and candle, and we would kneel and pray. She always made me feel happy and confident. I used to love her natural hair under her wig - she said it looked bad, but I thought it was beautiful - so long and straight. Her enjoyment of nature and walking made her a kindred spirit!
