Molly was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, where she attended Hyde Park High School and studied at the University of Chicago. In 1941 she married Harold L. Hitchens, who was soon commissioned in the Army Air Forces. Following World War II the couple lived in Chicago until then-Captain Hitchens was recalled to active duty and served a long career in the Air Force, the family living in Texas, California, Virginia, and Colorado. After retirement, the couple lived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and later Aurora, Illinois, where Colonel Hitchens preceded her in death in 2000. Molly subsequently moved to Tucson in 2002, living with her daughter's family. She spent her final years nearby at the Canyon View Care Home in north Tucson. She was awarded both Bachelor's and Master's degrees at the University of Denver and worked as a substitute teacher for many years, as well as working as a travel agent. She is survived by three of her four children: Ralph, Jay, and Susan Hitchens; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Her oldest son, Philip predeceased her in 2013.
