I was saddened today to hear that one of my most impactful grade school teachers has passed away.
Miss Witzlsteiner was my 2nd grade teacher at Redeemer Lutheran School. I have so many fond memories of her she was strict and ran a tight class - she had perfect handwriting on the black board - she always brought sandwiches for lunch and would sit outside on her green, rolling desk chair during lunch and watch us play when I'd get in trouble, she'd grab me by the ear to get my attention and hold me accountableit worked!
But what I remember most about her was music. She was the one who introduced me to her love of music, and it quickly became mine. I found my voice in her class, singing hymn and after hymn out of the red Lutheran hymnal. Funny enough, one of the songs I remember most was Fifty Nifty United States.obviously not spiritual in nature, but thanks to her, I can recite all 50 state in alphabetical order. It's a talent not many people have (-:
I remember one day, my mom had a parent-teacher conference with Miss Witzlsteiner and I clearly remember her telling my mom, I know you have Jodie enrolled in dance classes and gymnastics, but I really think she should focus on vocal musicshe's got talent and it would be a shame to waste it. From then on, I started taking lessons and practicing. Singing, no matter what the song, brings me incredible joy and is such an important part of my life. She gave me the confidence to pursue it.
She gave me opportunities to sing in front of the church and build my confidence to present and perform. It's a skill that I still draw on today when I teach a seminar or prepare for a big presentation.
I'm saddened to think she may never had known the impact she made in my life, but I know one day, I'll get an opportunity to hug her in heaven and say thank you. Rest in peace, Miss Witzlsteiner.
