Winifredo Daluz SAMOY

SAMOY, Winifredo Daluz peacefully entered eternal life at age 83, on Tuesday, January 30, 2018, surrounded by his family. He was born on January 6, 1935 to Marcella Daluz and Gregorio Samoy in Bacoor, Cavite, Philippines. Winifredo entered the US Navy at the age of 18 and served for 25 years obtaining the rank of Chief Petty Officer, which, he was told by an Admiral, is the "backbone" of the Navy. He served tours in Korea, Vietnam, Lebanon and with NATO for which he received multiple decorations. He met the love of his life, Josephine Barut Castillo, an elementary school teacher, while stationed at the naval base in Astoria, Oregon. Together they raised five children, Valerie, Melanie, Stephen and Stephanie (twins) and Arthur, while relocating every two years, finally retiring and settling in Tucson in 1979. "Papa Wini", as he was fondly called by his seven grandchildren, enjoyed cooking for and playing games with them and spending time with extended family. He especially enjoyed singing and dancing with Josephine to the tunes of Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Vic Damone, Vicki Carr and other artists of his era. Winifredo's experiences as a boy surviving the occupation of the Philippines during WWII instilled in him a deep appreciation and love for the United States. He had an unshakeable faith in God, deep love of family and strong work ethic, all of which he modeled and shared with all who came his way. A Memorial Mass will be held on Thursday, February 15, 2018 at 8:30 a.m. at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Tanque Verde Room, 1800 N. Camino Pio Decimo. Interment with military honors will be Friday, February 16, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at Arizona Veterans' Memorial Cemetery at Marana, 15950 N. Luckett Rd, Marana, AZ.
