James Garner Obituary

James E. "Ed" Garner 86, passed away on Sunday, April 3, 2011, surrounded by his wife of 63 years, family, and friends. Ed was a devoted husband and a loving father and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ora Garner Spencer; father, Ira Garner; step-father, Orville Spencer; three brothers, and five sisters. Ed is survived by his wife, Norma Kohlbecker Garner; his children, Susan Easton of Mesa, AZ, Jim Garner (Nancy) of Warrensburg, IL, Greg Garner (Jean) of Tucson, and Julie Kaveloh (Scott) of Tucson; ten grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. Ed is also survived by siblings, Carol (Ralph), Butch (Ruth), Sharon, Harold (Phyllis), Evelyn (Melvin), JR (Debbie), and Sis (Bob). Ed was born in Chandlersville, IL. He resided in Decatur, IL, until 1971 and co-owned Garner Auto Body and Garner Texaco. He moved his family to Tucson, AZ in 1971 and was co-owner of Garner Auto Service near Tucson Estates. He was a World War II U.S. Navy Veteran, proudly serving his country from 1942-1946. Ed was a member of Macon Masonic Lodge No. 8 in Decatur, raised in 1968. He was part of the clown unit of Sabbar Shrine Temple of Tucson, where he was affectionately known as "Socko" the Clown and was Clown of the Year in 1986. He was a lifetime member of the VFW. Ed was also a faithful member of Cortaro Vista Community Church in Tucson. Ed enjoyed NASCAR, woodworking, practical jokes, and sports, including the Amphi Panthers, PRCA Lions, and UA Wildcats. He volunteered his time and skills at church, schools, and anywhere he found someone in need. Ed dedicated his life to the service and caretaking of others and was a friend to all. He will be missed terribly, but we know that he is happy to be with his Savior and fellow carpenter, Jesus Christ. Donations can be made to Shriner's Childrens Hospital. Visitation Thursday, April 7, 2011, beginning at noon, followed by services at 2:00 p.m. at EVERGREEN MORTUARY, N. Oracle and W. Miracle Mile, with Pastor Ted Vandeberg officiating, along with Masonic Services by Oasis Lodge #52 F & AM. Interment to follow in Evergreen Cemetery with military honors by the US Navy Honor Guard. www.evergreenmortuary-cemetery.com

Uncle Ed,

My heart is heavy with sadness, but at the same time filled with happiness knowing we will see each other again. Although the miles have been between us, the love has always been there.

It was a most sad day in my life when I received the news of your passing, Ed. You were very instrumental in molding my life back in the 60's by allowing me to do odd jobs for you and for you giving me advice on how to be accountable as an adult. Through our friendship for the last 60 plus years, albeit miles apart, you were always one of my most respected friends. I will miss you but, know you are in a much better place now.
Brother Glenn ( Socko ) Spain.
