Bennie Jennings Obituary

Bennie Lee Jennings died in a tragic accident on Tuesday, April 12, 2011. He was born October 2, 1955 to Arthur and Lelamae Jennings in Hinsdale, Illinois. Ben graduated from Grand Canyon High School, served four years in the Marines, and received an Associate's degree in business from Pima College. He was a master of many crafts, but an artist in woodworking. He could build a block wall, remodel a room, build custom cabinets, refurbish antiques to the original state, and would drop what he was doing to help friend or family. Some of his interests included family, fishing, poker, drinking Bud Light with his friends and country and Celtic music. Ben was a loving husband, proud father and devoted grandfather, in awe of his grandchildren. He worked for Pima County Facilities Management for the past six years, and owned his own remodeling business before that. He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Alice Marie; daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly Erin and Charles Bryan Tower; grandchildren, Trevor Layne and Audrey Erin Tower; siblings, Robert, Carol and Cristel Jennings. With respect to Ben's wishes for friends and family to celebrate his life with a "cold one", there will be a happy hour in his honor on Friday, April 22, 2011 beginning at 4:00 p.m., at Clicks Billiards, 3325 N. 1st Ave. Semper Fi, Grampa Ben. Arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Avalon Chapel.

Bennie was one of the kindest, loving, caring and talented people I have ever known. I know my life as well as the lives of his co-workers and friends at Pima County were changed for the better after Bennie came to work with us. I thank God for having Bennie in my life. God needed a carpenter and he would'nt settle for anything less than THE BEST!

Oh Al, I thought by now I'd be able to look at the Guest Book without breaking down, but to read how Ben touched others reduces me to tears again. Of course, I can't think of Ben without thinking of you two together. You were Ben's anchor and I saw the two of you grow closer year by year. I grieve for your loss more than you know. Ben was so genuine. He was unfailingly loyal. If you were lucky enough to be called his friend, there was nothing he would not do to help you in your time of need. The two of you rescued me more times than I like to admit. Of course, Ben's cheerful demeanor and truly kind heart (and yours) made me feel as if it were no trouble at all. Ben was exceptionally talented and he was a cornucopia of information. Of course, if you asked him the time, he would tell you how to build a clock! He was bar none the absolute BEST craftsman I ever knew. His friends at Pima County summed it up beautifully and I qoute them: "You were a true and consummate professional. Your skills were unmatched. You always found the best and brightest path to a solution for a difficult job; you approached each task as an adventure." Tucson has lost a good, decent, kind, unique citizen and Heaven has gained a bodyguard. God bless you, Ben.

Bennie - we miss you.

Our shop is a little quieter since you left us. It is hard to walk past your tools without giving thought to you; a dear friend is gone.

You were a true and consummate professional. Your skills were unmatched. You always found the best and brightest path to a solution for a difficult job; you approached each task as an adventure.

You had a calm demeanor, and a true sense of self-courage. You were strong-willed, but even-tempered. You endeared yourself to many, but none moreso than Louie, John, and I.

It is hard to sit next to your chair knowing that our dearest friend won't be joining us. Many tears were shed, and many prayers were said.

When God puts his arms around you, know in your heart that Louie, John, and Bret miss you greatly.

Every room in our home is a tribute to the fine skills and loving craftsmanship of Ben Jennings. When our son was young and would hang around Ben as he worked, Ben would give him riddles to solve. Ben was tolerant of our many puppies who over the years stole important tools and hid them in the backyard. Ben was kind and generous and honest and hardworking. He was a meticulous true craftsman, a perfectionist who took his work personally. We first met Ben because of his woodworking talents, and over the years he became a personal friend to this family. Our thoughts are with Alice and her family. Ben was simply the best.
