Jeanne Sweeney Obituary

Jeanne P. Sweeney 91, of Tucson, passed away peacefully on May 22, 2014, surrounded by her family. She was born in Pittsburgh, Penn., on January 20, 1923 to Margaret and John Patrick Moroney. Jeanne married Leonard Sweeney on May 23, 1946 and they moved from Pittsburgh to Tucson in 1950 with two toddlers and an infant-and the family grew to 11 children. Her calling was motherhood! She was fun, feisty, energetic, happy, witty and wise-and very Irish. Her positive attitude and inner strength never failed her-even after the death of her husband, Leonard, December 17, 1967, at age 49. Then, her love of children led her to work as a teacher in Head Start Program for several years, and later to demonstrate fire safety at local elementary schools for the Tucson Fire Department. She had wonderful longtime friends, and her lady friends "The Club" met weekly for crafts and cards. Loss returned to her life with the deaths of her daughter, Peggy, in 2008; son, John, in 2011, and her companion, Frank Cadden, in 2009. A woman of strong faith, her daily rosary honored her devotion to the Blessed Mother, and her trust in God never faltered. In her final days she told her family, "Have a happy life and stay close to God." She is survived by daughter, Patricia Bezunartea (Mike Sweeney), Scottsdale; son, Leonard (Mary), Glendale; daughter, Mary Duncan (Alex), Tucson; daughter, Kathleen Sweeney, Los Angeles, CA; son, Tim (Deborah) Valencia, CA; daughter, Terry Powell (Stan), Las Vegas, NV; daughter, Erin Ruiz (Rene), Scottsdale; son, Dan (Tressy), Reno, NV; son, Chris, Thoreau, NM-as well as 32 grandchildren and 14 great- grandchildren, so far. She is also survived by her sister, Betty Champ, 94, Pittsburgh; Sweeney in-laws, Rosemary "Sis" Merriman, Maureen Derringer, Ed Sweeney (Lois), all of Pittsburgh, and Sister Redempta Sweeney, I.H.M., Bear, DE, as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family. A Visitation will be held 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. with a Rosary at 7:00 p.m., Friday, May 30, 2014 at the ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Avalon Chapel, 8090 N. Northern Ave. at Magee. A Funeral Mass will be held 10:00 a.m., Saturday, May 31, 2014 at Sacred Heart Church, 601 E. Ft. Lowell Rd., Tucson, AZ. Burial will follow at Holy Hope Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, it was her request that donations be made in her memory to Casa de los Niños, 1101 N. 4th Ave., Tucson 85705.

May 28, 2014

Jeanne Sweeney loved, and was loved back, by so many of us.
Her spirit, presence, and warmth are within me forever. I can see her face and hear her voice. I see her surrounded by all her smiling children.
She always greeted me by announcing my presence, with the use of my full name, first and last. As a child, it made me feel special, like I was somebody.
I loved that she laughed at her own jokes...a tradition I have followed in!
And what a laugh she had! It was contagious!
She was a most loving, loyal friend to my mother.
A close friend, in her 60's, who raised a few children as a single Mom, told me recently, that when she was having a tough day, struggling to get through, she would think of Jeanne Sweeney, with all those kids..She thought, if Mrs. Sweeney could get through, with grace and dignity, then she certainly could, too!
Rest in peace, Jeanne Sweeney,
Kathy Hannan

Summer Visit to Tucson

Mary Broglie

May 28, 2014

Dear Sweeney Family, What an amazing wonderful Mother Jeanne was. She was my Tucson Mom and you all were my second family. I felt more like a sibling then a cousin from Pittsburgh, PA.
I loved her feisty, no nonsense personality. I'm sure I gave her a few gray hairs when I came for an extended visit after Graduating from High School. I grew up in many ways and learned so much about family support from Aunt Jeanne and all of you. I will cherish my memories forever and as I move on in my life as a mom who lost a child I will keep Aunt Jeanne close as she will inspire me to carry on and be strong as she was.
Cheers Aunt Jeanne,
Love Mary Champ Broglie

When we first arrived in Tucson in 1961 and enrolled in school, we realized that there was a Sweeney in all of our classes. The Hannans and the Sweeneys became fast friends and were back and forth between our two homes. Jeanne was always capable, funny and lively. She was a rock when her husband Leonard died much too soon, leaving her with 11 children to raise on her own. She took it all in stride. In her later years, she and our mom, Marion were members of the "ladies club" and enjoyed many conversations and activities. I spent a lot of time with Jeanne over a 40 year period and I will miss her very much.

I first met Jeanne in 1971 when my wife, Pat Hannan and I, visited Tucson on our way back to the Peace Corps in Korea. From that first moment, I knew that a special bond would develop. Jeanne had an incredible ability to welcome, and make comfortable, everyone she met. I was no exception - and we began a friendship that would grow stronger with each passing year. Jeanne became my Tucson Mom.
I trusted her, loved her and confided in her. Jeanne was the most practical person I have ever met.She always had a no nonsense solution for any situation; her advise was rock solid. We often sat on the front porch, had tea, or sometimes a nip, and watched the world go by. In later years, Frank Cadden joined us and we would laugh, joke and tell stories. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
They were good times that I will always remember - just like her Chicken Chalupa, her wonderful family, and her ever present smile. Jeane really was my dear friend and even more, my Tucson Mom.
I will never forget you Jeanne. Love, Mike

Our condolence to all the family - a life well lived - to the fullest. Thanks for sharing her love, and wrath, and wit and humor, the twinkle in her eye, the bluff in her voice and the welcome toddy (slightly before noon). She loved much that will be carried on through the generations. I shall cherish the memories. What a great family!

To the Sweeney family our love and prayers go out to each of you! We know you are hurting because the loss of a mom is hard to describe but the celebration of her life should be Hugh! If I had to describe your mom in one word it would be hospitality! We will never forget our trip to AZ with Father Ray (he spoke of her energy and wit until he passed). She made certain that we were taken care of and didn't miss any highlight that AZ has to offer! She packed a lunch on our trip to a canyon and threw us the biggest welcome party with the family! She raised her family with the closeness and love they have for one another. We are sorry we cannot attend her service but please know we will be thinking of all of you with much love!! Xo.
