Lloyd Smith Obituary

Dr. Lloyd A. W. Smith was born on January 3, 1945 and passed away on June 14, 2013. Dr. Smith is survived by Carol Smith, his beloved wife and life partner of 43 years; his sons, Dr. Garrett Smith (Cori Moriarty) and Tracy Smith; and grandchildren, Taryn and Milo Smith. Dr. Smith lived his professional life as a dentist in service to others. He had a great chair-side manner and empathy for his patients. Dr. Smith retired in 2010 and had a long bucket list. Ironically, he dedicated over 40 years of his life making sure patients had 'painless' dental treatment; yet he could not overcome his painful struggle with cancer. Dr. Smith in 1966 received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder, where he was active as an undergraduate in Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and intramural sports. He earned his D.D.S degree in 1970 from the University of Washington Dental School in Seattle. Dr. Smith served from 1970 to 1972 as a captain in the U.S. Army Dental Corps at Ft. Leonard Wood in Missouri. Following Dr. Smith's Army Dental service, he and his wife moved to Tucson where they spent the rest of their professional lives. Lloyd had a very full and busy life as a husband, father, grandfather, dentist, and athlete. He participated in many sports, including baseball, golf, racquetball, skiing and scuba diving, motorcycle riding and racing. He also enjoyed traveling throughout the world with his wife and family. He loved cooking and entertaining good friends in Tucson. Dr. Smith was an active member of the Centurions, a men's charitable organization, for many years and was also involved in several dental study groups. Donations in his memory may be made to Wounded Warriors Project. Memorial Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 29, 2013 at ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Avalon Chapel, 8090 North Northern Avenue, Oro Valley, Arizona.

We are honored to have known Dr Smith. He was an excellent dentist and an outstanding person. We always looked forward to seeing him and Carol; it was more like visiting old friends than going to the dentist. He touched a lot of lives and we'll miss him. Our thoughts are with the family and hugs to Carol. Rest in Peace, Dr. Smith. We'll never forget you.

Carol, I am Sharon Cox, Peggy Pitzer's sister and I used to be a patient of Lloyd's and I visited with you whenever I came to the office. Lloyd came to Max's funeral and Peggy and I were so very touch that he traveled all the way to Yuma to be there. I had a great visit with him and we talked about old times in the 70's when Lloyd would go dirt bike riding with my husband and me. We had so much respect, admiration and just plain liked the heck out of Lloyd. He wasn't just a great dentist, he was a wonderful friend, especially with Max! When you or one of your son's get on your feet, somewhat, after the funeral, please email Peggy with you new email or phone #. Pam Pitzer is with me right now and she need to ask you how to get hold of her old dental records. Please, please, there is no rush on this. By the way, if I would have known of Lloyd's passing Pam and I would have come to his funeral. God be with you all the way on your future journey without Lloyd. It will be rough but you'll make it. We know you are a strong gal!

Carol, I was a good friend of Lloyd's growing up in Midland. We played on a great Little League all star team and I spent the night at his house with Marilyn and Blex. We lost touch after high school. I can see from all the comments that he was a great dentist and a wonderful person. God Bless, Bob

Dear Carol and Family,
Please know you are all my my thoughts and prayers at this most difficult time.
It so saddened me to see that wonderfully kind smile in the Sunday paper. As a patient of Dr. Smith's for almost 30 years, I can only thank him for everything he has done for me.Never, ever will I find a dentist who truly cared as he did. He is one of a kind and I am so blessed to have had him as my dentist for so many years. He is one of those 'pivotal people' in my life. May he rest in peace and know he touched many lives in such a positive way.

Lloyd Smith was a wonderful dentist, caring for several generations of my family over decades. I had long respected him as a conscientious professional dedicated to providing the highest-quality dental care to his patients at an affordable price. He was also a very personable guy who took time to get to know his patients as individuals. After he shared his cancer diagnosis with his patients, I found new reasons to admire him. He faced his illness with strength, courage and humor. His positive outlook and his determination to enjoy whatever time he had left were truly awe-inspiring. When I last spoke to him a few months ago, he described himself as “the happiest terminally ill person you know.” He was taken from us far too soon, but his life-affirming legacy will live on.

Dr Smith was a kind emphatic man and a great dentist. My wife and I were his patients for many years. and we became friends as well.He had a good sense of humor. On my first visit with him and after reading and signing the bit about the fee for missing an appointment, I jokingly said my policy was to charge him my hourly consulting fee for the time I had to wait after my appointment time. He laughed. Often when it was almost time for me, he would prompt his staff to speed things up to avoid my fee. In all the years I visited him, he was never late. Dr. Smith was the most gentle dentist I and my wife had ever known. I will miss him very much.
