Joseph Davin Obituary

DAVIN, Joseph Leo, on Friday, February 18, 2011 Joseph died at University Medical Center. He was most dearly loved by his wife, Cathy and his children, Jim (Ruth), Barbara (Curt Monson), Carol (Roberta), Tim (Fernanda) and Patrick and their mother, Loraine. He is survived by his brother, Bill (Barb) and will be missed by all of his Colorado family. Joe will be missed by his brother-in-law, Joe Lynch and all of his Rochester nieces, nephew and their families. He is greatly missed by grandchildren, Melanie, Steven and Heather Monson, Aaron, Nathaniel, Joseph, Gabriel and Eli Davin. He will also be missed by his sisters-in-law, Janet Lord, Elizabeth (Bill Metcalfe) and their children, Scott (Emily) Metcalfe and Anna, Susan (Andy Speno) and children, Erin and Benjamin Speno. Joe was predeceased by his sister-in-law, Susan Hansen but will be missed by her husband, Jack, their children: Josh (Natasha) and Emily (Parker Smith) and their son, Huxley Smith. Born in 1930 to Leo and Lucille Davin, Joe was the eldest of three, with siblings, Mary Lou Lynch (deceased) and Bill. He was raised on a farm with thoroughbred horses in Avon, New York, and graduated from the University of Toronto, BA 1952, MBA 1954. He served in the United States Army from 1954 to 1956. Joe spent his career at Manulife Financial in Toronto, Ontario, retiring in 1986. He married Catherine Auld in 1982. They traveled throughout Canada and the United States, finally settling in Tucson while still spending summers at their cottage in Kincardine, ON. In 1994, Joe and Cathy became enthusiastic members of SAGE (now OLLI), a learning-in-retirement organization at the University of Arizona. Over the years, he led many classes and contributed to the OLLI leadership, serving as president. It was here that Joe and Cathy formed the most wonderful friendships. These close friends were with Cathy and Joe's daughter, Carol, throughout Joe's last days, providing support and love. The compassionate care of the nursing staff and others at the University Medical Center made his last days bearable. Throughout his life, Joe was a lover of learning; he read extensively and continued to explore new ideas with friends. He loved being with his grandchildren, hiking in the great outdoors, and just enjoying each day of his life. Joe lived his life with joy; he was truly a good man. He will be missed always. I just recently heard and was saddened to hear of Joe's death. Unfortunately our families were not in close contact in our younger years but I was fortunate to see Joe and enjoyed chatting with him at Mary Lou's funeral in late 2009. Please accept my sincere sympathy.
