Thomas BOYER Obituary

BOYER, Thomas David, MD lost his battle with cancer at the age of 74 on January 11, 2018 at his home in Tucson, Arizona.  Tom graduated from the University of Redlands with a B.S. in Biology and from the University of Southern California with a M.D. of medicine.  He completed his internship at New York University Medical Center and residency in Hepatology at the University of Southern California Medical Center. He served with the United States Public Health Service in the U.S. Coast Guard, New London, CT from 1971-1973. Tom was internationally renowned for his work in Hepatology and his contributions to the field will be remembered. His book, Zakim and Boyer's Hepatology, in its seventh edition, is considered the definitive textbook on liver disease worldwide.  He has also authored innumerable scholarly articles and has been routinely listed among the Best Doctors in America. As a foremost expert on liver disease he served as president of the American Association for the Study of Liver Disease and a recipient of their Distinguished Service Award. He was also President of the International Association for the Study of the Liver. Tom was a devoted son, husband, brother, father and grandpa, a thoughtful and supportive friend, and a loving companion.  For those who knew him, they were proud to call him Dad, brother, Grandpa, friend, and colleague. Tom's favorite past times included golf with his Skyline Men's Golfing Group, playing with his grandchildren and dog, Addie, giving advice to his children, and sitting on his back patio taking in the view.  Words to describe Tom include forthright, honest, incredibly intelligent, supportive and kind. He is survived by his brother, Clayton Boyer of Phoenix, his daughter, Sarah Howard (Scott), grandchildren, Mathew and Evan Howard of San Francisco, son, Thomas David Boyer, Jr. of Phoenix, his loving companion, Sherry Laemmermann, and his faithful dog, Addie. just learned of his passing. He was a favorite classmate at USC Med School (1969) and later fellow in liver with Dr. Telfer Reynolds and Alan Redeker. I have many favorite memories of his participation and leadership. God Bless Him.

I am saddened to hear of his passing. He saved my life 10 years ago. I will forever be grateful for his knowledge, his skill, and his willingness to try things and methods other Drs. Wouldn't. At the time I had 2 young children, and because of Dr Boyer and his staff, I am watching my grandkids grow up, and my youngest attend the U of A. My prayers to his family. Thank you Dr. B for life.

I am quite saddened by this news. He was my mentor while he was at Emory as the Director of the GI division. He is a towering figure in hepatology, especially in portal hypertension and complications of cirrhosis. He was honest and maintained very high standard for himself and expected the same from everyone. His passing is a major loss for the hepatology community.
