Herman GLADSTONE

GLADSTONE, Herman (Chaim) of Tucson, AZ, passed away peacefully on March 24, 2017, at the age of 93. Herman was born in New York, NY to Shifra and Joseph Gladstone on September 19, 1923. He married Renée Rechtman on February 24, 1945 in New York. He attended college and medical school at the University of Wisconsin - Madison, and took his residency in psychiatry at Bellevue Hospital in New York. He was stationed in Crewe, VA during the Korean War where he served in the Army as a psychiatrist to returning soldiers. After establishing his practice in New York, Herman returned to Madison with his young family in 1960. There he worked in private practice, served as director of student psychiatry at the university, and was president of the Wisconsin Psychiatric Association. He owned a sailboat and the family enjoyed many summers sailing on Lake Mendota. Seeking warmer weather, the family moved to Tucson, AZ in 1972, where he continued his private practice. He was also a teaching associate at the University of Arizona Medical School and served as president of the Tucson Psychiatric Association. Herman retired in 1989 and pursued many interests, including working as a docent at the UA Art Museum and Kitt Peak Observatory. He never tired of learning and continued his studies, exploring astrophysics, the science of consciousness, art, and music. He played classical guitar, beginning as a young man. Always active, Herman was still skiing in his 80s, and bicycling in his 90s. Herman was preceded in death by his son, David and his sister, Naomi. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Renée; children, Donn (Elizabeth Newman) of Sebastopol, CA, Lila Tevik (Greg) of Tucson, AZ, and Sheila (Stephan Windsor) of Austin, TX; grandchildren, Roger, Chloë (James), Ben, Aaron, Jacob, Kate and Allison; great-granddaughter, Simone.
