Jacquelyn COMEY Obituary

COMEY, Jacquelyn Jones 7/7/1929 - 1/5/2018 Beloved wife, mother, daughter and friend, Jacquelyn Jones Comey died peacefully in her sleep surrounded by family at her home in Tucson on January 5, 2018. An educator, faithful PEO sister, and tireless community organizer, "Jackie" as she was known to family and friends had the gift of mercy. Following Christ's example, she lived generously and loved fully, always giving of herself to others for the betterment of the community. A graduate of Shaker Heights High School in Shaker Heights, Ohio, Jackie earned her B.A. and Master's degrees from Ohio Wesleyan University and worked as an elementary and junior high school English teacher for many years in the Cleveland and Hudson, Ohio public school systems. Jackie and Ralph were married in August 1961. Her family moved from Cleveland to Tucson in 1972 when Ralph accepted a professorship at the University of Arizona, and Jackie became deeply committed to community service, serving on the boards of trustees of the Tucson Art Center (as it was known then; predecessor to the Tucson Art Museum), chairing its Christmas Bazaar and Balle' des Arts, and was a driving force in the founding of the Tucson Museum of Art School. She volunteered at the St Luke's home for the elderly and at The West. Jackie also took great joy in the love and fellowship with her sisters at the AD Chapter of PEO. Jackie and Ralph were also regular participants in the University of Arizona's Faculty Foreign Foods monthly dinners. Jacquelyn is survived by her husband, Ralph; sons, Chuck of Palo Alto, CA and Drew of Tucson; and stepdaughter, Janet of San Diego, CA. Memorial Services followed by a short reception will be held at Northminster Presbyterian Church, 2450 E. Ft. Lowell Rd., which Jackie and Ralph attended as committed members for many years, on Friday, February 9, 2018 at 1:30 p.m. Arrangements by DESERT ROSE HEATHER MORTUARY.

Aunt Jackie has been one of the bright lights in our family. Her sophistication, intensity, and good humor were always inspiring. Our thoughts and prayers are with Sandy and all the Comeys.

I have such wonderful memories of Aunt Jackie as we were growing up. Spending time with her, Uncle Sandy, Charles and Drew were a special part of my chilldhood. After I was married and moved to Wisconsin, I enjoyed her yearly notes in her Christmas cards. I will remember you with a smile.

Aunt Jackie as we fondly called her was a dear cousin of my mother, Nancy Houghton. We always cherished her visits since she was such an uplifting spirit. We would reminisce about the family Christmas traditions as passed down by her mother and my grandmother, two of the Kelley girls! The hot chili Christmas Eve dinners and the Christmas cookie recipes live on among other traditions. I especially looked forward to Jackie's Christmas card novels, neatly written in perfect grade school print. She would fill every blank space possible on the holiday card with family news. She was such a special, loving woman that leaves many fond memories!
