Margaret Haines Obituary

Margaret Palmer Phelps Haines Peggy died in Tucson on Saturday, April 23, 2011. She was born to Richard and Margaret Phelps in Springfield, Missouri on March 25, 1918. Peggy later moved with her family to Kansas City where she graduated from Westport High School and then attended the University of Missouri, graduating in 1941 with a Bachelor of Journalism degree. After graduation, Peggy moved to Washington, D.C. where she worked for CBS News until the outbreak of World War II, when she married her college sweetheart, Stacy Haines. They had two children, Stacy III and Cathy, and remained together until his death in 1984 at their home in Sewanee, Tennessee. After his death, Peggy moved to Tucson and became active in her new community, serving on the board of the English–Speaking Union, where she coordinated its annual High School Shakespeare Competition for 12 years. She also served on the University of Arizona Theatre Arts Department advisory board and was a stalwart supporter of the Desert View High School Lady Jaguar tennis team. She is survived by her sister, Molly Bean (Ace) of Kansas City, MO; her son, Stacy Haines; daughter, Catherine Quesnel (Jerry), both of Tucson; two granddaughters and six great-grandchildren. Peggy had a vibrant spirit and will be remembered fondly by all those whose lives she touched. Per her request, no services are planned. Arrangements by HEATHER MORTUARY.

For Debby Stirling-- Peggy, as you say, had an irreverent sense of humor. As a teenager spending probably far too much time at the adult cocktail parties, I suggested to her that "Child Burgers" on a menu were perhaps not FOR children, but perhaps made of.....
You get the drift. We kept that one going for a long time, and obviously it is still out there in my brother's mind. Just a bit of the great fun we had together.

To Stacy and Cathy,
Your mother was a real joy to be around. She was a true friend of my mother and father, as was your father. I last saw Peggy in Tucson in 1998. My brother visited Peggy in Tucson in 2004.

She always had a smile and was full of only good things to say about her children and anyone else who had crossed her wonderful life.

I am full of sadness to just now learn of her death, seven months ago.

Please accept my sincerest condolences.

Our whole family treasured, above all, her irreverence and generosity (speaking of which, I must know more about this "Child Burger" mentioned in another comment here!)

Cathy and Jerry, Please accept our deepest sympathy in the passing of your mother. I just read about it on the Sunnyside link. You have been a wonderful daughter and son-in-law. We love you both and hope that in time your pain begins to ease. If there is anything we can do, don't hesitate to ask. Michell and barb

Peggy Haines provided great inspiration to me during my efforts to facilitate Shakespeare monologue competitions for high school students. As an active member of the English Speaking Union she wrote me letters of encouragement and visited school recitations. We also shared many wonderful conversations about drama at Arizona Theatre Company productions.
I will treasure these memories. I like to vision her witnessing a perfect monologue.

Dear Family of Peggy Haines.
I just heard the news about your loss. She was a wonderful woman, kind, and love the students. It was always a joy to see her at the University for performances and rehearsals. She will be missed.
Peace to all of you,

I was so sorry to read about your mom. I really enjoyed talking to her about Kansas City and Westport High School, my mother's school, too. We connected and loved looking at the Westport yearbooks at some of the tennis matches. She was a special lady. My condolences to you and your family. Myrna Frisch

I celebrate this wonderful woman who did so much-- for me, for so many many students who participated in the ESU’s Shakespeare Competitions, for the teachers she understood who struggled to make it all happen. She was always so positive and supportive. She wrote the dearest and most treasured notes. I thank Peggy for my most rewarding years of teaching and the chance to work with students and Shakespeare’s “Words, words words…” as Hamlet says. The Horatio’s of us left behind shall try to continue her work.
“ Now cracks a noble heart. Goodnight sweet Princ[ess]. May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.”

I was saddened to hear of your Mom's passing. I only knew her through a work relationship, having taken care of her Jaguars for many, many years...but I always knew she was a very special lady. She was always very sweet and kind to me, as I'm sure she was to all who knew her. My condolences to your family.

A sad loss of another founding member of "The Greatest Generation". In over forty years of enjoying Peggy's company, wit, humor, missives, and phone chats, I never once heard a discouraging word. I salute the passing of a dear friend of my family and a brilliant classy lady.
On my next visit to SRCC I shall check the dinner menu for the infamous "Child Burger" .... alas, it shan't be there, but I will be thinking of all of the Haines family.

I will mss the Lady Margaret & the sparkle in her eyes. She was
wise, fun, irreverent, thoughtful and supportive. Her letters, clever wit and way with words will be greatly missed. She had presence, could throw a grand party, make any occasion better and her spirit could fill a room. She was my Auntie Mame!

I might have met you once or twice, but it didn't take me that long to realize the kind of person you were. You were always there for our matches, and cheered us on. Now I know where Coach’s enthusiasm came from. With out him, I wouldn’t who I am today. And it’s all because of you. You will surely be missed Mrs. Margaret!

I went to grade school and some high school with Stacey; we were good friends. I was over to his house many times, where his mother ("Mrs. Haines") made it one of my favorite places to be (cookies helped). Even to my grade school mind, she was beautiful, always smiling, and both a good talker and listener (important to this son of a shrink). I can understand how she will be sorely missed by her extended family. May her memory be a blessing. Daniel Weinberg (Chicago)

My mother instilled in me a passion for literature, and I hope I succeeded in instiling in her a passion for helping others. She lived a great life, and died peacefully at home. What more could anyone ask?
