Sherry TEACHNOR Obituary

TEACHNOR, Sherry passed away peacefully on October 22, 2017 after a long and courageous battle against illness. After graduating from Mills College, she was a Peace Corps volunteer in the Dominican Republic in the 1970's, beginning a lifetime of serving others. She then graduated from Santa Clara Law School and was awarded a Reginald Heber Smith Scholarship to represent migrant farmwokers in Michigan. She continued to pursue justice for farmworkers as the national coordinator for local programs at the Migrant Legal Action Program in Washington, D.C., where she met Michael McCrory, her husband of 37 years. She worked as an international law consultant in Hong Kong, Singapore and Brunei before moving with Michael to Tucson to pursue civil rights cases for strikers in the Phelps Dodge copper strike as special counsel for the United Steelworkers. Following the strike cases, she and her husband opened a private practice office in Tucson that also included work in Ajo and Hermosillo. She continued that practice in Tucson and Ajo after Michael joined the City Attorney's Office. The 1993 assassination of her friend, Guy Malary in Haiti, led to a Haitian art fundraiser that blossomed into Haiti Arts/Galeria La Sirena, a Latin American and Caribbean art gallery in Tucson. Sherry loved being able to provide an outlet for local and international artists and original art that was filled with bright color and vitality to her clientele. Sherry advocated for many progressive and social justice causes, candidates and values in Arizona, the US and the world, over her entire life. She loved her friends and her five hounds, Basil, Daphne, Buddy, Sally, Pippen. For remembrances, she wanted contributions to Partners in Health. A Celebration of her Life will be at Tucson Botanical Gardens at 4:00 p.m., Friday, November 3, 2017. Arrangements by DESERT ROSE HEATHER MORTUARY.

I just learned of Sherry's passing in the State Bar magazine. I was privileged to work with Sherry for a common client a few years ago. She was bright, lighthearted and exceedingly committed. I remember fondly a few meetings in her "gallery/office." I thought that was just the coolest thing. I knew her briefly, but she taught me quite a lot and she made a large impact. My sincerest condolences.

I met Sherry and Mike while working with farmworkers in Oklahoma on a Reggie Fellowship. After I returned to Tucson and opened a private practice, I was happily surprised one day to see them in the office next to the one I was visiting. A long friendship developed. Sherry would often consult me on criminal matters for her clients. I just read of Sherry's passing in the State Bar Journal. She was a wonderful progressive voice of which there are now too few. She will be sorely missed.

I have just learned of Sherry's passing. The last time we spoke she had just returned from Cuba. I will always have fond memories of her law office gallery.

Sherry was one of the leaders in the early days of the efforts to extend meaningful legal services to migrant farmworkers across the country. She helped train and mentor hundred of young lawyers and other advocates who joined in this effort.

Sherry was a true warrior for justice. She was one of the bravest people I've ever known. She never waivered in her commitment to help people who needed help....never. No matter how sick (or tired), she fought to give every bit of herself that she could, to do what needed to be done. She was remarkable and I will really miss her.

So sorry for your loss, Michael. Sherry was a sweetie. I was one of the friends, who "babysat", the Galeria, when Sherry was busy! I purchased lots of beautiful art there. Also, your framing was the best!
I'll remember Sherry in my prayers. Be at peace, dear friend. Cissy
