Alan LURIE Obituary

LURIE, Alan Brigadier General, US Air Force, retired Alan, 84, died in Tucson on Tuesday, September 12, 2017. He was born on March 24, 1933, in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Louis and Edith (Bedol) Lurie. On September 5, 1954, Alan married Mary Todd at Euclid Avenue Jewish Temple in Cleveland. Alan and Mary were both students at The Ohio State University, meeting in an arts history course. In 1955 Alan earned a BA degree in history from Ohio State and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant after completing Air Force ROTC. He went on to have a very distinguished 32-year career in the Air Force, retiring as a General Officer. Alan and Mary had three children before Alan started his service in Vietnam. Alan was an ace F-4C fighter pilot, with 75 combat missions flown. Shot down over North Vietnam on June 13, 1966, Alan was a prisoner of war for nearly seven years, with the last few months being at the notorious Hoa Lo prison ("Hanoi Hilton"). Following his repatriation on February 12, 1973, Alan returned to his family in Apple Valley, CA; he had missed more than seven years in the growth of his three children. Still, despite the loss of those years, he provided his children with many beloved memories. Alan continued to excel in Air Force assignments for another 14 years. He was the Commander of the 836th Air Division at Davis-Monthan AFB from November 1982 until September 1984, and retired in June 1987. During his career, Alan earned a chest full of Air Force medals, most notably the Air Force Distinguished Service Medal; Silver Star; 3 Legions of Merit; Distinguished Flying Cross; 3 Bronze Stars, one with "V" device; 2 Meritorious Service Medals; 4 Air Medals; 2 Air Force Commendation Medals; Prisoner of War Medal; and 2 Purple Hearts. After military retirement, he had a second career as the Vice President of the Southern Arizona Home Builders Association. Alan's primary retirement hobby was fly fishing. He tied his own fishing flies and enjoyed fishing getaways with buddies several times per year. Survivors include three children, Kim, Kit (son-in-law, Bill Zarbis), and Cameron (daughter-in-law, Angie) Lurie; two grandchildren, Kaitlin and Amelia and a sister-in-law, Barbara Lurie. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Mary; his parents, a brother, Joel and a grandson, Matheson Lurie. A Memorial Service at EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY, 5801 E. Grant Road, will be held on Saturday, September 23, 2017 at 5:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Arlington National Cemetery.

When I was a young teen, my sister and I signed up for POW/MIA bracelets. Her soldier never came home but mine did and he sent me a picture. At the time, he was a Major and I saved that bracelet and picture all
These years. I´ve always remembered his name and how happy I was that he returned home to his family. He was the same age as my dad. Thank you for his service and the family as well. Julie Stewart

Just went through an old jewelry case and found his P.O.W. bracelet. I see I am not the only one who wore it for many years. I was 18 when he was captured and 25 when he was released. I so enjoyed reading the story of his life. I too was born in Cleveland, Ohio near Euclid Boulevard.

My wife found this band bracelet at a yard-sale I started researching online. Wow, a serious man of courage and honor. If there is family out there, I would be happy to return this. It was breathtaking to read about this incredible man. I believe this should be reunited with family.

I, too, wore the bracelet with his name on it while I was in college in Kansas. If the family members would like to have it, please let me know. I hope that this message gets to his family. I would like to honor him in this way. Blessings

I finally found my POW bracelet of Maj. Alan Lurie. I wore this all through college and I am pleased to find out he lived a very full life after being released. I was wondering if someone in his family would like to have his bracelet. My e-mail address is : [email protected]. I don't know if you are able to forward this to any family members, but I would really appreciate any help you can give. Thanks, Joyce Larsen

I remember Brigadier General Lurie from my time at 12th Air Force, Bergstrom AFB, Texas. I was the 12 AF Training NCO at that time. It was a great privilege to have known this great man. I'm saddened by his loss. May he Rest In Peace, he definitely earned it.

I was cleaning out some old drawers and found Alan Lurie's POW bracelet that I wore in Junior High School 1970-1973 when he was released. He lived such an accomplished life after having been through so much as a POW. If some one in his family reads this and would like me to send you the bracelet, I would be glad to do so. My name is Marianne Ehrhart Bain and I live in Georgia. Please send me a personal message via FB

I grew up in Pittsburgh and graduated from high school in 1972. I wore Major Alan Lurie's POW bracelet for several years in high school. I want to thank his family for his valor and service. I lived in Washington DC for many years and Major Lurie was the first person I looked up at the Vietnam Memorial, to see if he had survived the war. I am gratified to read that he lived a full and happy life. My sincere condolences.

As the Plant Lady in Tucson, I will always remember Alan for his line, more like a quiet growl, "WHY am I the only one that can see that dead tree at the entrance to this base?" A stickler for order and details, Alan provided me with an amazing education at DM and a nomination and most unbelievable experience at the War College at his behest. My efforts in the POW/MIA movement were always shared and I benefited in our conversations immensely. Alan was always a steady force as he sought to bring me up to speed in all things DM, military and particularly his beloved Air Force. Born into a Marine family, my trained push-back often required his patience<:) I am most grateful for his time spent with me in the 80's as an aspect of Leadership Tucson. Anyone who engaged Alan benefited from the interaction. He was for me the patient teacher. He is with us always. My condolences to his so-loved family! I do believe that the base could now sprout a few trees out front - a field of dreams. This would make him most happy (if maintained<:)!!!!! He will supervise!

Alan was one of my father's dearest friends and was a gift to his life and every life that he touched.
I came to know Alan through their friendship and found him to be incredibly kind and generous of spirit.
He was a touchstone for me as I dealt with dad's illness and passing and I will be forever grateful to him for that. Here's hoping that they're enjoying breakfast together again.
My thoughts and prayers are with Kim and Cameron and all of you who he loved so dearly. He adored you and his dear wife so very much.

My sincere condolences. I knew Alan from his SAHBA partnership work with the City of Tucson to help bring affordable housing to eligible Tucson families using surplus infill lots found throughout the community. He was a polished, wonderful gentleman, and as City staff assigned to work with him on these projects, I call myself very fortunate to have gotten to know him. He was a great leader.
