I am so sorry to hear of this loss...James was my Drill Instructor, Platoon 1140 at MCRD San Diego in the summer of 1969. I am pleased to hear he had such a successful career back in his element. Rest In Peace, Marine

My condolences to the family. I had the pleasure of having Jim as my Drill Instructor in Marine Corps boot camp and what a Marine he was. When I read the article he wrote on LZ Margo it misted my eyes to think what he went through. Having the honor of serving with such a Marine was a privilege and honor I will never forget.

I served with Gunner Doner in 1972 with 1st Force. He was the S2 chief and I was a CPL in the office. He made quite an impression on me. I'm sorry for your loss.

Florence,
I just found out about Jim's passing today when I got home from the farm. Jim was many things, chief among them was, he was my hero. We did many things together and I was honored to have served in combat with Jim. Jim will live on in the Marine Corps because he will not be forgotten by those of us fortunate to have served with him and learned from him.
God speed and safe home Jimmy D. I will see you in Valhalla.

We will miss him ... always.
A remarkable, inspiring, humbling, and ... entertaining ... presence in our lives.
He was the "real deal" in environments where it was sometimes too rare.
"The bravest man I ever saw", has said a prominent Marine general.
