Leslie TURNER Obituary

TURNER, Leslie Gordon Born February, 1922 in Halifax, Yorkshire, Great Britain; passed away November 11, 2017 at Peppi's House. Les emigrated to the United States with his father, Robert in 1930. They were joined later by mother, Louisa; brother, Eric and sister, Kathleen (all deceased) in Ogden, Utah. Gloria Brandt (Orange, CA); his younger sister, was the family's first natural-born American citizen. As a callow schoolboy in Ogden, he met the girl who would be his bride, wife of 71 years and widow, Jeane Marie Tatro - a three year-old at the time. He spent his WWII service with the U.S. Army in France, then returned to Ogden and his job as a clerk in the U.S. Post Office - his employer for the next 30 years. Married in May, 1946, Les and Jeane had two boys, Robert (Sharon) and Douglas (Gayle - San Antonio), in three years, followed a few years later by two more, Stuart (Nancy) and Curtis (Christine - Stafford, VA). In the early '50s Les began training for the Postal Inspection Service, the Postal Service's law-enforcement arm. That meant weeks at a time in Pueblo while his family was in Ogden, but in 1954 the family moved - lock, stock and Studebaker - to Pueblo. Three years later, it was Greeley, Colorado, then, in 1960, to Tucson. And there he stayed, investigating mail fraud and training new postal inspectors until 1972, when he was posted as the Manager, Fraud Branch, at postal inspection headquarters in Washington, DC. After retiring from the Inspection Service as Assistant Chief of the Washington Division in 1975, Les went to work for the Arizona House of Representatives Task Force on Organized Crime. He finished his working life investigating white-collar crime for the Pima County Attorney's Office. A member in good standing of the National Association of Retired Postal Inspectors, Les served one term as its national president; attending every regional convention during his tenure. An accomplished bridge player, enthusiastic golfer and, through his early seventies, an avid tennis player, Les was a good man and a good father. His was the picture you found in the dictionary with words like honesty and integrity and he provided an exemplary figure for his boys, his 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Per his wishes, there will be no memorial services. Arrangements by BRING'S BROADWAY CHAPEL.

My condolences to Les's family. He was my boss in the Washington Division in the 70s. He was the perfect example of competence skill in fraud investigations. More importantly, he was a good guy. Farewell Les.

Les was my first boss at The Inspection Service Fraud Branch in Washington D.C. he was a great guy to work for and an excellent model to have as a mentor. I returned to the Inspection Service after a hiatus with The DoD IG and I had Doug as an instructor at the Academy in Potomac. My condolences to the family at the loss of a good man and father figure to us all who knew him.

Dear Jeane and Family,

I am sorry for your loss. Les and I worked fraud cases together from 1978 to 1981 when he was with the Pima County Economic Crime Unit. Les' kindness and warmth always made everyone very comfortable and his abilities as an investigator were to be emulated.

On behalf of the Cactus Chapter of the National Association of Retired Postal Inspectors, I extend heartfelt condolences.

Peace and All Good,
