Richard LOCKHART Obituary

LOCKHART, Richard D. "Dick" passed away January 20, 2017, in Tucson, AZ, at the age of 86. He was born in San Antonio, TX, to Samuel R. and Euesta Lockhart. Dick was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Samuesta Lockhart. He is survived by his beloved wife, Michaele, and sons, Charles (Karen) Lockhart and Douglas (Ellen) Lockhart; three grandchildren, Christine Mims, David Lockhart and Samuel Lockhart and six great-grandchildren. Dick attended Texas A&M University and received a BS degree in Civil Engineering in 1953. Upon graduation he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army. He served two years active duty and continued to serve an additional 19 years in the Army Reserve before retiring as a colonel. Dick's career spanned 40 years with the Texas Department of Transportation. As a licensed professional engineer he was responsible for the planning, designing, and construction of much of San Antonio's freeway system. During the six years prior to his retirement in 1993 he was District Engineer in charge of all TXDOT operations in the 16-countywide San Antonio District. A descendant of a pioneer family that came to Texas prior to the Texas Revolution, Dick had a deep interest in Texas history. After his retirement he volunteered as a docent at the Institute of Texan Cultures in San Antonio. In 1996, he and Michaele moved to Tucson, AZ, which she considers her hometown. His interest in history then focused on Arizona and the West. He joined the Arizona Historical Society as a docent, leading tours at the AHS museum. Although his military time was spent in the Army, he had a deep interest in WWII airplanes; he also became a docent at the Pima Air & Space Museum. He and Michaele enjoyed many years traveling and exploring the beauties of the American West and Canada. Interment will be at Southern Arizona Veterans' Memorial Cemetery near Ft. Huachuca. In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make a remembrance gift in his name to the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona. Arrangements by BRING'S BROADWAY CHAPEL.

Michaele: So sorry about Dick. My time with him at TxDOT was one of admiration for his integrity, loyalty and compassion for others. Tomi and I remember fondly the courtesy you both showed to us several years ago when my brother-in-law was dying there in Tuscon. We always wanted to come back but never did. Our loss. The memories of his sense of humor and his engaging laugh will always brighten the darkest corners of our hearts. May God hear our prayers on your behalf. Tomi and Arnold Oliver

We have loved our time spent with you and Dick. While infrequent, these memories are touchstones of a very long friendship, Michaele. Dick's love of history and the Southwest inspired us, and we became more active in exploring what has come before, Native Peoples being a special interest. Deepest sympathy and love, dear friend.

I served under Mr. Lockhart while he was District Design Engineer and District Engineer in the San Antonio TxDOT District. Mr. Lockhart was very confident and taught me to surround myself with great people. He exuded high integrity and honor and he will be missed. Proverbs 3:5-6.
