Samuel Joseph Obituary

Samuel Richard Joseph M.D. passed away May 2, 2011. He was born in 1925 Crabtree, PA and raised in Youngstown, OH where he graduated from Chaney High School in 1943. Shortly after graduation, he was drafted in the U.S. Navy Seabees during WWII serving in the Pacific including Saipan where he made a life altering decision to use his hands for healing. He attended Ohio University where he worked his way through school holding on to his GI Bill money to attend and graduate from the St. Louis University School of Medicine and completed his surgical residency at St. Louis City Hospital. Dr. Joseph left St. Louis in 1960 to take the position of chief of surgery at the Pima County Hospital. His medical practice included an office on Craycroft, Group Health, Carl Hayden Hospital, Benson Hospital, teaching at the University of Arizona School of Pharmacy and served as chief of surgery at St. Joseph's Hospital. Sam volunteered 25 years of service at St. Elizabeths of Hungary Clinic, St. Mary's surgical board, and Salpointe Catholic High School Board. He was a devoted parishioner at Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church where he served on the parish council, finance committee, school board and chior. The bells that ring every day at the parish were donated by Dr. and Mrs. Joseph. Sam loved his family, time in the garden, good Italian food and camping on the beach in Rocky Point, Mexico. He was a peaceful and prayerful man who quoted the Bible with ease and great understanding. He will be remembered for his positive view of life, his laugh and sense of humor. Sam was unselfish and giving to all. His kindness and love knew no boundaries-his compassionate, healing touch will be missed by all. Dr. Joseph is survived by his children: John Louis Joseph, Mary Catherine (Ben) Palazzo, Thomas Richard Joseph, Regina Marie Rhine, Anthony Edward (Sherrie) Joseph and Mark William Joseph; grandchildren, Joe, Nick, Dan, Tim, Tony, Laramie, Sheridan, Griffin, Molly and Sam; sister, Margaret Rodi; sisters-in-law, Ann Joseph and Betty Diemer; nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Casa Maria Soup Kitchen, 401 E. 26th St., Tucson, AZ 85713 or the Joseph Educational Scholarship Endowment Trust at Our Mother of Sorrows. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m., Friday, May 20, 2011 at BRING'S BRAODWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway Blvd. with Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass will be held 10:00 a.m., Saturday, May 21, 2011 at Our Mother of Sorrows, 1800 S. Kolb Rd. Private interment will be in Holy Hope Cemetery.

To Sam's Family;
I am sorry for your loss but hope the memories of his long and helpful life will stay with you forever. Sam was one of the surgeons I knew who really loved people as much as their problems. I worked with Sam for a number of years at GHMA. I vividly remember one day when one of my favorite patients had a surgical problem and there we were in the exam room at 5:30 pm on a Friday where Sam examined the patient and explained to her what to do and to call him if she had any further problems. The three of us were just visiting and hanging out for a while before she left and I was so impressed with how personal he was and could put patients at ease. Now you know why he was always late for supper!

Dear Joseph Family,

I was talking about your Dad just the other day and remembering his teasing sense of humor in the office and was saddened to read of his passing. He was a wonderful person.
I worked with Dr. Joseph at GHMA for many years and have great memories of his caring and kindness to both his patients and staff. I was telling a friend the story of how I would tell him "ya me voy" when I was leaving for the day. His response was always "Ah - La joventud, ya se va para no volver" and it always made me smile.

My sincere condolences to you all.

To the Tucson Joseph's, our nearest cousins.
We were all so fond of Uncle Sam. He holds a very special place in our hearts, this king of puns. I think Dad would have been lost without him all those years away from the rest of their family members. They had a special bond; loving, kind, sympathetic. I'll never forget my favorite uncle, my godfather Sam. Sitting around listening to Dad and Uncle Sam tell stories from their childhood was one of the best things.
The two of them loved to laugh, and make the rest of us laugh too. We were all so lucky to have family holidays celebrated together with great food, fun, and long walks after our big meals.
The Joseph brothers are all reunited. Much love to you all.

Dear John and all the Joseph family,

My sincere condolences on the loss of your dad/grandfather. My dad always laughed about a visit he had to your dad's office. He said, "Dr. Joseph, my wife says my hearing is going." To which your dad held his watch up to my dad's ear and said, "Frank, can you hear this ticking?" My dad said, "Yes," and, and your dad replied, "Then you're okay!" We keep our dads and their senses of humor in our memories forever. God bless,

Dear family of Sam Joseph. I moved back to Tucson in 1969 and started my medical practice. My office was at 888 S. Craycroft, in what had been Dr. Joseph's office. Richard Dale was practicing in the same suite. My wife and I attended Mother of Sorrows also. I recall a meal at your parent's home. Homemade pasta and spumoni ice cream. What a treat! In 1976, we moved to NC, so I did not see Sam's return to practice. Your parents were the greatest, especially at showing hospitality. I know the loss for you is hard, but I also know they are happy together in heaven at this moment. Rose and Dick Finn
