A. WILLIAMS Obituary

WILLIAMS, A. Richard FAIA 1914 - 5/27/2016 Dick Williams FAIA, a retired internationally known and respected architect, who resided in central Tucson for the past 30 years, gently passed away earlier this summer. He was a professor of architecture most of his career at the University of Illinois in Champaign, Illinois, was an active design critic at the U of A and was well known as a visiting architectural critic in Europe. He was a Navy officer and served valiantly on a minesweeper in the Pacific in WWII. His architectural accomplishments earned him national AIA design awards and his contributions to education, service to his profession and community design contributions resulted in accolades from national and international professional associations. He established generous scholarships at four universities and created endowments that will continue to inspire and support future generations of architects, planners and landscape architects. He touched many lives during his years in Tucson and was a friend and mentor to many people. During his long lifetime he instilled the passion for design in all who know him. There will be an informal Celebration of Dick's Life on what would have been his 102nd birthday on Friday, September 23, 2016 from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. in the Sundt Gallery of the College of Architecture, Planning and Landscape Architecture at the University of Arizona. Parking is available at the Park Ave. garage. Contributions may be made to the College, in his honor, to support the ARCHON Prize, a design competition established by Dick 10 years ago.

I remember him very well in the sixties when he would visit my architect father Gene Asbury and corroborate designs at our home, he would drive to our home in a Black “Karmann Ghia”
With a black French style beret ,, always thought he was too big for car but fit his personality quite well ......
Will miss him and remember him not fretting when I jumped into his freshly raked gravel in his living room in Champaign Il

Dick was our neighbor and my 5 yr old son had written his name all across Dick's wooden fence. I apologized to Dick and his reply was "never stop the creativity of a child" - our children loved helping Dick sand his sailboat in his back yard. Dick was a wonderful teacher and great neighbor. Happy sailing, Dick!
