Alex S. Thompson

Alex S. Thompson passed peacefully on January 27, 2011, at UMC from viral encephalitis. Born in Douglas, AZ, August 7, 1935, to rancher Alex J. Thompson and former school teacher Maryan Williams Thompson. Graduated from Douglas HS in 1953, UA (BS physics) 1957, UA (Masters Electrical Engineering) 1967. Alex was a key player in aerospace industry in Tucson at Hughes, Bell Aerospace, Bell Technical Operations, and PKG Systems and a founding member and treasurer of St Michael's Credit Union. After retiring in 1992, he followed his interests in history, and genealogy which led to many friendships and much paper. He had a brilliant mind, a great smile, and a kind heart; he always did what he thought was right. Preceded in death by parents and sister, Ellen Quimby. Sadly missed by wife, Mary K; daughter, Elizabeth Thompson Marvin (Brian); son, Allen Thompson (Holly); stepson, Steven Birchfield (Christine); granddaughters, Nicole Marvin, Alyssa Marvin, Rachel Thompson (Michael) and Emily Thompson; grandson, Abe Thompson; former wife, Leila Johnson; nephews, Chuck Quimby (Katy), Bill Quimby and Jim Quimby. He was a friend of Bill W. A Memorial Service for Alex will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 12, 2011 at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, 602 N. Wilmot Road, Tucson, AZ 85711. As he wished, Alex's ashes will be scattered in the high country of the Chiricahua Mountains. Arrangements by DESERT ROSE CREMATION AND BURIAL.
