Charles GIRVAN Obituary

GIRVAN, Charles Daniel "Dan" passed away on February 1, 2018 at Providence Hospital, Columbia, SC. He was born February 1, 1951 to retired Air Force Major Charles M. Girvan and Nellie Jo (Cole) Girvan of La Salle, Colorado. Dan grew up on the family farm in La Salle, CO. A 1969 graduate of Valley High School, Gilcrest, he received his B.S. degree in 1973 at the University of Northern Colorado and was commissioned through the Reserve Officers Training Corps program. Upon the completion of his training, he joined the Air Force with the rank of lieutenant where he began his service as a T-37 instructor pilot. His career as a pilot instructor in the Air Force took him all over the world. In 1983 he was stationed at Davis Monthan Air Force Base where he flew/instructed the OA-37 until his retirement in 1987. He joined the Air National Guard in 1987 where he instructed the A-7 and F-16. He retired in 1994 from the Air National Guard, achieving the rank of Major. In 1985, Dan married the love of his life, Judy Fry, in Tucson, Arizona. They were happily married for 33 years and enjoyed many fun adventures together. His favorite hobbies were mainly hunting and competitive shooting; He took great pleasure in interacting with his friends, family, and daughters online and in person. Dan is most loved for his delightfully irreverent sense of humor. One could always count on him to lighten the seriousness of any situation. Dan was a member of Hope Lutheran Church in Santee, SC, where he was an active volunteer. Dan is preceded in death by his father, Maj. Charles M. Girvan. He is survived by his spouse, Judy; mother, Nellie Jo Girvan; daughters, Jennifer (Chris) Garcia of Tucson, AZ, Amanda (Brad) Barre of Baton Rouge, LA; sister, Cindy Sanders of La Salle, Colorado; his grandchildren, Wendy Barre, Elliott Barre, and Eddie Garcia as well as a niece, nephew, cousins, aunts, uncles, and many dear friends. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, February 10, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at Hope Lutheran Church, Santee, SC. The family will be greeting friends and relatives following the service in the fellowship hall. Burial will be private at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Hope Lutheran Church or Fisher House Charity at: www.fisherhouse.org.
