Charles WILMOT Obituary

WILMOT, Charles "Chuck" 95, died Tuesday, April 18, 2017, in Phoenix, Arizona, but he lived most of his life in Tucson. He is survived by a son, James C. Wilmot; two daughters, Dorothy W. Gaynor and Catherine A. Wilmot; and three grandchildren, Michelle Shtutman, Max Gaynor, and Michael Gaynor. Chuck first came to Tucson in the early 1940's during his pilot training in Marana. In 1944 he piloted 50 daylight missions over occupied Europe, including six over the oil refinery at Ploesti, Romania, one of the most fortified targets in Europe. Chuck received numerous medals, including the Distinguished Flying Cross. Sadly, he was forced to retire due to war injuries, but he subsequently obtained his Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics, after which he worked at the US Dept. of Agriculture. Chuck really enjoyed retirement. He traveled the world, wrote a book on travel, became a self-taught computer expert, and served more than a decade as a docent at the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum. He will be interred with full military honors at the National Memorial Cemetery in Phoenix, Arizona. Arrangements by HANSEN MORTUARY.
