Dale Hutchins a Tucson native who served as a Naval Officer in the Battle of Midway and later was a real estate attorney, died in Tucson on July 18, 2013. He was 92. After graduating from Tucson High School in 1938, Mr. Hutchins attended the University of Arizona for two years then completed OCS at Northwestern University and was commissioned an Ensign in the Naval Reserve. He fought in the important naval battles of Coral Sea, Midway, and Santa Cruz and survived the sinkings of the aircraft carriers USS Yorktown and USS Hornet. After shore duty on Guadalcanal and other Pacific islands as a communications officer, Mr. Hutchins attended Naval Postgraduate School at Annapolis, where he married Marguerite Cullen in 1945. After WW II he returned to Tucson and was the Commanding Officer of several Naval Reserve units eventually retiring as a Captain. Mr. Hutchins graduated from the University of Arizona College of Law in 1948. During his legal career he was in private practice with the late Judge William Kimball, served as Deputy Arizona Real Estate Commissioner heading the Tucson office, and was the attorney for the Horizon Corporation responsible for compliance issues. His community activities included Boy Scout leader, American Legion baseball manager, and usher at SS Peter and Paul Parish. Mr. Hutchins will be remembered for his thoughtfulness and wry sense of humor. Dale Ellis Hutchins was born at St. Mary's Hospital to former Tombstone AZ residents Maude and De Barton Hutchins on January 10, 1921. He was preceded in death by his brother Barton. His survivors include his wife, Marge of Tucson; a son, Steve Hutchins of Saugatuck, MI; a daughter, Mary Ann Frisbie of Decatur, GA; and three grandchildren. A private memorial service will be held.
