ALLEN, Elouise Harvey, died February 10, 2011 at Peppi's Hospice at Tucson Medical Center. Elouise was born June 20, 1918 in Tams, WV and grew up in West Virginia. She earned a B.A. Degree in English and Library Science from the University of West Virginia in 1938. While at the University she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority and earned admission to Kappa Delta Pi honorary society for English majors and Phi Beta Kappa. After graduation she taught junior high and high school English and was a Librarian for two years. On April 7, 1939 Elouise married Earl W. Allen. The couple relocated to Denver, CO in 1940, then to Salt Lake City, UT in 1950 and finally to Tucson in 1966. They enjoyed 45 years of marriage before his death in 1984. Elouise was an active member of WAAIME, the Mining Auxiliary and the PEO Sisterhood of which she was a member for over 50 years. Her affiliation with PEO was especially dear to her heart and she leaves behind many cherished friends. She was the consummate hostess and enjoyed entertaining groups large or small. She spent her quiet hours making afghans for friends, crocheting over 50 before her frailties robbed her of that pleasure. She is survived by her sister, Mary Lou Gray; son, Robert Allen (Paula); her daughter, Erin Corbell and granddaughter, Kacie Jo Corbell; daughter, Barbara McDermaid (Bruce); granddaughters, Suzanne Swanson, Megan McDermaid, Mary K. Phillips and Amy Hughes and great- grandchildren, Ashley Saxon, Amanda and William Swanson, Rachel and Timothy Phillips, Sean and Erin Hughes. Family was very precious to Elouise and she found great joy in being surrounded by them. A special debt of gratitude is owed to the staff of Aslan's Home who took care of Elouise for three years after she could no longer live on her own. Their devotion made the final years' journey more comfortable as the Alzheimer's stole her memories, her intellect and finally her spirit. A celebration of Elouise's life will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, February 14, 2011 at EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY CHAPEL. Contributions in lieu of flowers are suggested in memory of Elouise to the PEO Educational Loan Fund, c/o PEO Executive Office, 3700 Grand Ave., Des Moines, IA 50312-2899;
or a charity of choice.
