Very sorry to hear that Floyd passed some time ago. I worked with Floyd in 1978 to 1983 when I managed a computer system for his research group. I learned a lot from Floyd and had great respect for him.

I was saddened to have just learned of Floyd's death...I marched in band with Floyd in 7th & 8th grade and and after all these years wondered what he was doing and where he was. He was so smart and so much fun to be around. I am pleased to learn he kept his sense of humor. He was a very memorable person. Maggie, my sympathies go out to you.

I've not seen or talked to Maggie in decades but I feel comforted to know that she had the love of a man who many people admired. I wrote this poem a few years back when my brother was diagnosed with colon cancer. I hope it conveys my empathy and condolences.
CANDLES
I wipe her fevered brow.
I'm not sick says she.
I know,
But I'll bring tea.
I find her pulse,
So steady now,
belies the tempest
in her chest.
Here, I've brought tea.
I light candles
on the chiffarobe,
looking at the long night
and pour the tea.
We've come this far
and so many years.
Why not one more night?
Now forgotten, the tea.

I only met Floyd a few times through his wife, my friend, Maggie. We drifted apart recently and I will always regret the lost opportunity to know Floyd better. I cherish my memories of the love and happiness shared by Floyd and Maggie. Maggie - my thoughts are with you always.

I knew Floyd only slightly, in the 60's and 70's, and remember him as a kind, dedicated, and diligent person. I am grateful that he lived.

We met Floyd through our long time Ca. friend, Maggie. Her move to Az.made us very sad, but we were very touched by the love that she found there. First impressions of Floyd with his blue jeans,suspenders and flannel shirts brought to mind a very down to earth person,which he was but his mind was on the celestial wave length.We thought it cosmic that the day after Floyd passed there was a large upheaval in the gaseous clouds covering Jupiter..perhaps Floyds loving and funny spirit.

We only got to spend time with him once, but we have laughed and talked about that meeting many times since. May he rest in peace, and may his wife find comfort in happy memories.

I got to know Floyd when we moved to the LPL Sonett Bldg. He often helped me with scientific data. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

My sincere condolences to his wife, Maggie, and his extended family members. From the time I first met, trained, and learned from Floyd as a teenager down to today--almost 45 years--he has always been an inspiration to me. In fact just last week I was talking about him and how strong he was to encourage a beginner who is also very strong but suffers from asthma. Images of Floyd's strength of mind and tremendous spirit are always with me and he has always been my respected senior. Floyd was a shining star. I will miss him, but his influence will live on.

Floyd was a great friend but he always kept his skills sharp as a BS detector. I appreciated being on the sharp end of his wit. We trained in karate together since 1962 at Caltech, and shared many good times in the US and Japan. I'll always remember zooming down Melrose Ave in his Jag XK120 as he looked for a gas station to control his steaming radiator. He was a strong role model for all of us. My sincere condolences to Maggie.

I met Floyd through Maggie who is my great friend. Oh how she bloomed once she found him. I found him to be delightful, so smart and with a great sense of humor. He will truly be missed.

I enjoyed all the visits to Tucson and Cedar City with Uncle Floyd, Aunt Maggie, and the rest of the Herbert family. I am glad to be a part of the family and to have met a man with such kindness and a wonderful sense of humor. Uncle Floyd, I love you very much, and you are greatly missed.

My thoughts are with Maggie and all Floyd's friends who will miss him so much. He was a wonderful friend to me when Chuck went to Africa, and continued to be a good friend all these years. I'll always remember him for his great photography, wanting to eat cold grapefruit in the morning on camping trips, and cooking yummy Japanese meals just to be nice. He even helped me build a spectrometer for my astronomy class hundreds of years ago! He was so patient and generous with his time. He was a kind and thoughtful person, and will really be missed.

I remember when a new kid came mid-semester into my high school. He was assigned the empty seat behind me in Mr Keene's history class and we became great buddies. Floyd and I built telescopes, talked long hours about science and politics (that was before he lost his bearings and became a Republican), and later both majored in astronomy at different colleges. When he came to UofA for grad school we shared a small house and awful cooking. Later I moved away and he stayed put, finally finding Maggie, who made his life worth living. Floyd was my best man, and always my best friend.

Floyd was a good Tucson, and world, citizen. I loved running into him at lunch in Sonett, where we'd talk about the latest in the Economist and discuss the wonders of Io.
