Mr. Hartington was one of my favorite teachers. He made a mandatory class fun for a groups of teens more interested in other things, certainly not history. He was a teacher who made a difference in his student's lives, and that is rare. I was very lucky to know him, he was a good man.

Dear Barb, Phil, Amy and Clayton, My heart goes out to you... Tsave Tanum ( Nepalese). Please, dear ones, want to be helpful, supportive... and consoling.

George was my Jim's best friend/fraternity brother at Monmouth/TKE's., in our wedding party, our reason for coming to Crystal Lake and CLHS, and ALL the years 1948 -2003. Oh,the stories the two of them could tell. His kindness and caring were full blown in retirement volunteerism. He was "Uncle George" to our three. I'll miss his knobby knees on Christmas card pics!

There are THOUSANDS of lives that are richer and fuller for having had George as their teacher, their cohort, their friend. George lived his faith and his beliefs. And what a meticulous yard he maintained, manicured to the nth degree.!

"Broadway George" was the nickname we students gave to Mr. Hartung, (not to his face, of course), due to his love of the Mets and the Rangers. He was always outnumbered by Cubs and Blackhawk fans in his history classes--outnumbered, but never outgunned. He could take us all on at once and more than hold his ground. He had a unique way of teaching history, whereby he would use us students as examples of famous people in history, and really get our heads into the game in the process. He was a good friend to my father, and my all around favorite teacher throughout my formative years. I just wish that I would have known that he lived here in Tucson, for I SURELY would have visited him! In any case, farewell wise mentor, and thanks for everything! Respectfully, Roger Repp CLCHS 1972, Tucson resident since 1981

Mr. Hartung was an amazing teacher and I loved being in his class. So sorry to hear that he has passed. He made the subject so interesting. He also kept firm control on a bunch of kids that weren't always all that interested in history or civics. Susan Younger CLCHS 71

So sad to hear of Mr. Hartung's passing. I never much cared for history but in my senior year I needed one extra class to graduate early and joined his class. Was so glad that I did! He made it interesting and fun and he went down in my history as one of my favorite teachers. Thank you Mr. Hartung for your dedication to your students at Crystal Lake Community high school.
