George Hilliard Obituary

George Webb Hilliard 1923 - 2011 Traveling by train from Pittsburgh with his cousin Toby to Montana one summer, George fell in love with the west. As soon as he finished boarding school and briefly attended Princeton, young Hilliard moved west and never looked back. His education at the University of Arizona was interrupted by service in World War II as an enlisted man and officer and later as First Lieutenant in the Korean War. After the war, he graduated from the U of A "with high distinction" and did graduate study there and later at San Diego State University. In 1958 he established Southwest Grazing, Inc. a New Mexico corporation of which he was part-owner and manager. The company operated cattle ranches in Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado. After retirement, his interest in the history of cattle ranching and the American Southwest led to writing A Hundred Years of Horse Tracks, the story of the Gray Ranch and Adios Hachita, Stories of a New Mexico Town. He is survived by his wife Emily; his brothers, Harry and Richard; his children, Elizabeth, Raymond, Samuel and Stewart; daughters-in-law, Carol and Sandra Hilliard; step-children, David Jones, Nancy Jones Yadav and Margaret Jones Stimson; grandchildren, Harry Yadav, Eleanor Hilliard and Charlotte Beale. No services are planned. Memorial gifts would be welcomed at the Community Food Bank. Arrangements by HEATHER MORTUARY.
