Hilda Kendrick Obituary

KENDRICK, Hilda Anderson, 93, passed away peacefully April 7, 2011. Born in Sour Lake, TX, in 1917, Hilda attended Texas Women's Univ. and later taught business in East Texas high schools, at which time she met her future husband, Wallace, who commanded a CCC camp. They were married in December 1940. In 1941, Hilda embarked on a 30+-year career as an Army wife, supporting her husband through three wars and many military assignments and caring for her family during his absences. She served as a volunteer for military charities, as well as Friends of the El Paso Library. An avid mystery fan, Hilda also enjoyed gardening, cooking and her many friends. Hilda and Wallace retired to El Paso, TX, where they were active in military and civic groups and cherished their friendships. Hilda moved to Tucson, AZ, in 1998 after Wallace's death. In her latter years, Hilda met the challenges of increasing sensory deprivation and afflictions with a grace and dignity that inspired all who knew her. Hilda was preceded in death by her husband, Col. Wallace M. Kendrick (Ret.); her son, Wallace M. Kendrick, Jr. "Mac"; her parents and her brother, George Anderson. She is survived by daughter, Karolyn and her life partner, Peter Schmidt, in Tucson; son, George (Susan) in South Dakota; daughter-in-law, Patricia in California and five grandchildren, of whom she was very proud: Katherine Jennifer, Christopher McKee, Jonathan Troy, Elizabeth Mariah and Alexander McKee Kendrick. Graveside Services will be held at Fort Bliss National Cemetery in El Paso on Monday, April 18, 2011 at 10:00 a.m., where Hilda will be buried beside her beloved husband.
