Jane Hermes Obituary

Jane Paton Hermes was born in Findlay, Ohio on June 16, 1926 and returned to the Lord on May 3, 2011. Jesus, the center of her being, graced and sustained her always as she met life's rewards and challenges. Above all else, Jane will be remembered for her abiding faith and her treasured legacy of family and friends. Jane was a loving wife to L.P. Hermes for 65 years, and now, forever. Jane was an incredible mother to her six children, Judy Curry (Roy), Tom Hermes (Lucy), Mariann Hardy (Wendell), Linda Atkielski (John), Jill Kennedy (Jeff) and John Hermes (Kim); a wonderful grandma to Maura, Ressa and Nathan, Tom and John, Heather and Todd, Jal and Christine, Janel, Jennifer and Joseph, Nicola, Jay and Marc and also a great-grandma to Devin, Kamille and Chloe, Issabelle, Cami, Emma Jane and Holden, Samuel and Oscar, Byrdie and Alden, Christopher and Chase, Victoria, JW and Luke, Tivoli and Gabrielle. In a day when family members scatter across the country and even the world, Jane's loved ones continue to reside in Tucson or close by. As a testament to her loving nature, among her children and grandchildren are professionals in service to others to include teachers, nurses, police officers, firemen and philanthropists. Jane was mother and angel on earth to many more than her six children. Through her involvement in parish life and other community endeavors, Jane created an extended family of friends. As the most amazing friend to countless people, many who met her felt like they had known her forever. She had an infectious laugh and bubbly sense of humor that made all those around her laugh with joy. No one was immune to her warmth, wisdom and whit. All who came to know her see themselves forever touched by her love, laughter and generosity. Among Jane's many gifts the following stand out: Work with the Newman Sustaining Board, Vine of Grace Women's Retreat Ministry, Reach Out Pregnancy Center and she demonstrated her creativity as an artist, upholsterer and seamstress. Numerous loved ones are warmer today because of all the beautiful quilts she made. We have often heard it said that a person cannot be all things to all people. In contrast, Saint Paul says, "I made myself all things to all men in order to save some at any cost; and I still do this, for the sake of the gospel, to have a share in its blessings." 1 Cor: 9:23 (The Jerusalem Bible). This is what our mom lived, day in and day out. All her extended family wants to thank publicly our Lord Jesus Christ and His Blessed Mother for this incredible woman. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Newman Center Sustaining Board, 1615 E. 2nd Street, 85719; Vine of Grace Women's Retreat Ministry, 5122 E. Holmes, 85711 and Reachout Pregnancy Center, 2648 N. Campbell, 85719. There will be a Visitation for family and friends on Thursday, May 5, 2011 from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. with a Rosary at 6:30 p.m. at St. Cyril and then a Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday, May 6, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Cyril Catholic Church, 4725 E. Pima Street, Tucson, Arizona. Interment will be in Holy Hope Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to ANGEL VALLEY FUNERAL HOME, 520-327-6341.

To the Hermes family .....
Thoughts of being neighbors on Towner Street brings memories of laughter, raised eyebrows, noise, lots of kids, and of course, at the center of all the chaos,a delightful, calm Jane.
Such a lady.

To all the dear Hermes family,
What a blessing to have your mom (wife, grand and greatgrandmother) in my life. She was always so loving and accepting of all people. She reached out in love and with joy to make anyone who crossed her path feel comfortable and loved. And....oh, that humor! I know that each time after I was with her through the years, I remember my cheeks hurting from laughing so hard! I will keep her in my heart with joyful memories. I feel privileged to have known such a GEM! Our prayers will continue for each of you that the joy she brought to you will turn your tears into smiles.

Love and Hugs,

Dear L.P. and all the family,
I was SO sorry to learn of Jane's passing. I knew it would be in the not-too-distant future, but still . . . May God bless each and every one of you. To merely say that Jane/Mom/Grandma/Great-grandma was a "special person" would be the understatement of the century. (LP came to the hospitals - many times - to visit my own husband before his passing, and now this!!!!)
That quote from St Paul says it beautifully - she was indeed a living saint. (Note that I didn't capitalize "saint", because she was human, but what a wonderful human!)
L.P., my prayers are for you, mostly. But I realize that each one of you is hurting. Lean on Him and lean on each other. May
God bless you.

People do not die for us immediately, but remain bathed in a sort of aura of life. They continue to occupy our thoughts in the same way as when they were alive.
I will always remember your beautiful smile, your wonderful infectious laugh, that little mischievous twinkle in your eyes...and your incredible sense of humor.
I love you and I will miss you, but I know where you are, and I can only imagine..... I am truly blessed for having known you, thank you for loving me.

Jane…you were truly a model for me to be a better person…a better daughter…a better Catholic...a better friend...and NOW a better wife!!
With a smile on my face I can think of numerous times I have had the pleasure to be with you, whether it was at a jewelry party at Jill’s, at a Newman function, or at a family gathering, you ALWAYS made the time more fun. You always had the willingness to make things better, your words of wisdom on life, and your devotion to your family & friends was truly inspiring. I love your humor and especially that infectious laugh. I am so happy to call you my “adopted grandma” you mean the world to me and I will always love you. You made this world a better place and I can only hope that I am half the woman you have been.

“I am in a thousand winds that blow, I am the softly falling snow. I am the gentle showers of rain, I am the fields of ripening grain. I am in the morning hush, I am in the graceful rush of beautiful birds in circling flight, I am the star shine of the night. I am in the flowers that bloom, I am in a quiet room. I am in the birds that sing, I am in each lovely thing.”

The angels are always near to those who are grieving, to whisper to them that their loved ones are safe in the hand of God...

With my deepest sympathy to L.P. and all of Jane's family. I only knew of Jane through my Mom and sister, Megan. They shared with me was what a truly amazing and beautiful woman Jane was. Thank you for allowing my Mom and Megan be apart of her life, for that they are truly blessed and their lives are forever touched by a true angel.

Your Angel is near and watching over you, always.
