John and I were roommates at the University of Oklahome in the early 60s. I had a caiman in one half of a counter-top terrarium (because I was going be a 'biologist') and he had a guinea pig in the other half (because he was going to be a 'psychologist'). I used to go out to OU's fish hatchery to get a jar little mosquito fish (gambusia) to feed the caimen. John devised a Pavlovian plan to teach the guinea pig to ring a little bell-with-a-clapper (it made a sharp 'ding') when it wanted to be fed - so whenever John heard the ding he would immediately run to the fridge and get some lettuce for the guinea pig (who had trained John to run to the fridge and bring the lettuce every time he heard the bell go 'ding'). It was an interesting 'experiment'. (The caiman didn't seem to be affected at all, though.)

The picture didn't look at all like John when I first saw the obituary - "that's not John Howard!" but after realizing he had lost a lot of weight, I saw the resemblance - and he looks very handsome in the photo. And he was such a good guy! He (and Ann Sellers, his cousin whom he introduced me to - the world's best girlfriend! - and in fact all of his family - Jack, Janice, and Jim, and Ann and her family) taught me by example (and with great patience) what little calm and social grace I have (but I was such a dummy!) So a heartfelt 'Thanks, John Howard' - and for me, One Hundred Years of Mea Culpas). John was truly a wonderful guy, and I miss his undying wholesome goodness - it's meant a lot to me. RIP John Howard.

John,
Sorry to hear of your passing. It was a pleasure working with you at Pueblo Magnet HS. You started the Magnet Program in Communication Arts and Technology. You gave and showed students the opportunities that were out there for them. You thought them that all things are possible. The meaning of Si Se Puede! I will forever remember taking students ever year to Las Vegas to the NAB conference, hoover dam, media, technology, software, getting the media studio, radio station here 98.7, native american classes, there is so much more. The experiences that students and I will remember forever. I could go on and on...John I will always remember you, a great guy who looked at the world through the lens of a camera.

God Bless,
Susie Ugalde-Vazquez (aka Susie Lopez)

To Jennie and Family,
Just as the sun will set then rise with each and every dawn, the souls of those who lived life well eternally live on...
With Heartfelt Sympathy, Susie

I am very sorry to hear of John's passing. I met John while taking an introductory Media class at the UA. I was a Senior at Tucson High. He came up to me and asked if I would be interested in going his group, the Manzo Media Project. It's goal was to record the oral history of Tucson's Barrios. I said sure.
With three other high school students he had recruited, John taught us not only how to use the equipment he had, but how to tell a story. We would invite Senior Citizens who had grown up in Tucson and the surrounding area to tell their story of growing up and watching as the area changed before their eyes. He is one of the main reasons I went into Broadcasting as a career. I will always remember his laugh, big smile and his encouragement.

Jennie - My heartfelt sympathy for your family's loss. I want you to know how much I valued John as a friend and advisor, and for his ability to always look to the future. He helped me when I started my career and did so because of his passion for education. His legacy and the celebration of his life is rich and important. At Pueblo High School, his Media Arts Center continues to be the asset for students and the community that he envisioned. His work and contributions to the Native people are powerful and lasting. My sincere respect for John, my friend and someone I admired very much. I will miss him. Mona and I offer our prayers and condolences to you and yours. John led a good life that will live on.
Peace,

To John's loved ones,
He was a great leader at Pueblo. He brought the leadership skills out of my daughter in a way no one else did. The Warrior News was a great element of the magnet program he oversaw. I
will always remember what he accomplished by leading those kids so well.
Rest in peace John, you did great!

I am so sorry to read of the passing of John Crouch. Although my acquaintance with him was slight, he was something of a legend to the students in Pueblo and to the educators who admired and valued his work with technology in the media arts. He will be missed in life as he was in education.

John was an old broadcasting buddy and, later a colleague at TUSD. He was one of the smartest, most insightful, and creative people I have ever known. My most vivid memory of John was from a chat one day at Pueblo High. John was in charge of media and I was working at 1010. We were discussing communications and he commented, "Everything is going onto the Web." I was barely aware of the World Wide Web, which was in its infancy, and did not yet realize its potential for changing the world. This was nearly 20 years ago. John's comment changed my perspective and I have never forgotten it. Rest in peace, old friend. We'll have to discern the future without you.
